Exercise & Pulmonary Rehab Question

My PFT (FEV1) has been at 39% and steadily going down. I started to work out at Curves (I hope I can put that on here). Well after a month or so I had another appointment at the hospital. My PFT went from 39% to 59%. I was so happy that finally something that I did had a major impact on my lungs, in a good way. It feels so good to work out, not only for what it does for your body but the way it can help you 're-gain' lung function.

So I just wanted to encourage all of you to work out (doesn't have to be at Curves) but any exercise is better than none. And if I had amazing results then you might too.

By the way, I have to do Pulmonary Rehab per my doctors instructions. Has anyone ever done this and if so, what is it like? I will start in February and it's 2 or 3 times a week for 2 to 3 hours. First of all, who has time for this? And what can I expect? I would like to know what it was like for other before I sign up for this.

Thanks,
Kelli

First of all, raising you're pft's like that is AWESOME!

What kind of exercises did you do? How Long did you work out.

I don't really understand why your doc wants you to do pulm. rehab if you just raised your pft's 20 percent exercising on your own. I would think pulmonary rehab would be similar to what you are already doing? Can you explain why he wanted you to do this?

Great Job! Hope I can do the same. My pft's have been going up as well since I started exercising and lifting weights.

When you work out at Curves you do a circuit (which means, they have all the machines set up and you go in a circle until you're done.) You only work out 30 minutes 3 or 4 times per week. Like I said, all of the machines are already set up so you don't have to think about what you have to do next (you go around the circle twice which equals 30 mins). You are only on the machine (or mat, you can jog, do jumping jacks, etc) for 30 seconds and then you change machines. I think that helped because I could jog for 30 seconds and not get totally out of breath then I'd go to a machine, etc.. So it wasn't so horrible that I couldn't do it. In fact, it seems way to easy to get results like that (I also lost 6" off my hips & abs, double bonus). But I was SO encouraged that my PFT went up, I have tried everything and exercise is the ONLY thing has helped my PFT go up. I was so surprised.
And the machines just work on resistance, so the harder/faster you work, the harder it gets. This means you don't have to adjust weights. It takes the guess work out of everything. And I told the manager there that sometimes I have to go to the hospital for a couple of weeks and they will just add that time to the end of my membership, that way I'm not missing what I have paid for. (It's about $30 a month but you have to sign up for a whole year and pay as you go, it's cheaper that way.)
It's worth it though if you can make your PFT go up AND I stayed out of the hospital this winter (which is a record for me.)

Good luck to all of you!

Im so glad to hear that exercise is bringing your pfts up. I need to excercise, but I dont have an exercise partner, eventually, not sure when but my husband and I are going to buy an eliptical machine, so that will diffanatly help, because I can exercise in the comfort of my own home. It is very exciting to see good results when you work so hard at something.

I still don't understand why you need additional pulmonary rehab?

I go to Gold's Gym, not a girl, so curves is out for me.
