exercise remedies?

Ok, this may sound silly. But I am not active at all. I am pretty/really bad at sports, and have always been the lazy type of person. BUT I want to be more active, at least a little bit. I was wondering what kind of exercises are most beneficial, or make you all feel better. I have done the treadmill and the exercise bike in the past, but I always end up getting lazy and discontinuing my work-out routine. Do you think those exercises are enough? Should I run or walk on a track instead? When is the best time to exercise...morning/night? How long should I exercise...is 20 mins enough each day? I know most of these questions are going to have various answers, but I would like to know how most of you get your activity levels up. I am just so lazy! I know that it's important to gradually raise the amount of time someone exercises, especially if you're a beginner like me. I don't know how to keep myself going on a work-out schedule though. I just can't get myself to do it. Haha, I don't know what's wrong with me. Thanks.

Hi,
I think you should see, what you like best! How´s about dancing, horseback-riding, squash, skiing?(That´s what I did about 15 years )
Good luck

This isn't really a total solution, and may sound kind of dumb, but do you have a rec department where you live? If so, you could coach soccer for little kids like first graders or something. That way, it doesn't really matter if you're 'good' at sports- the kids won't be either . I don't know how much physical activity it is, but it is a set time to get some physical activity, and maybe afterward you could go for a run or walk by yourself. Maybe it could be a sort of motivator/trigger type of thing. Plus sometimes they pay.

Wow I just read this over and it really does sound dumb, but I'll post it anyway.

I have a problem keeping up my workout also but I usually go on a stationary bike for 30mins a day and lift weights for a hr. I like working out more than the bike. How about swimming!!!

I, too, have a hard time keeping up a workout schedule. I never really know what's best for me to do, either. One thing that might help is to grab a friend and work out together. Between the 2 of you, you can keep eachother going

Definately I recommend a work out partner! It helps sooo much. Sometimes I feel like I don't want to go to the gym but then I think I get to hang out with my friend, be active for a few hours and feel really good after. I work out with my friend who is kinda like my personal trainor. We do cardio; like the eliptical machine, treadmill or bike for about 30 minutes...we then do a lot of work on our abs, the we either do weights for our arms or legs depending on the day. I'm there usually like 2-2.5 hours a day 3-4 days a week. I love it. She want to start in the pool soon...I kinda hate swimming though. I hear that swimming is one of the best excercises for us CF'ers though.
Weights and cardio don't require much athletic skills but staying on task does..so grab a partner!

hey!...so for the past like 4 years i guess ive been wokring out...i started off with just taebo tapes which were really hard in the beginning and i couldnt do more than like 10 minutes...after a few months i was able to do the whole thing...i did taebo for like a year until it became toooo routine for me it wasnt enough REALLY....but still amazing wokrout to start, and its at home
than while doing taebo and afterwrdas i started to go jogging with my best friend every morning before school (at 530 am!! it was insane!) but having someone else going with me and motivating me to move was amazing!...
eventually i joined a gym, my parents got me a membership for my birthday and i have been going ever since!
now i do yoga, jog on the treadmill, do the elyptical, lift weights, go boxing classes, etc! depedning on my mood, i mix it up, which is great!
i would recommend that you start maybe jogging or even the jump rope..and do as much as you can (try at least a mile a day (or 4/7 days a week) and eventually youll build up your lung capacity to be able to go even farther/longer...
take classes at a gym or something, try it out, see what you like!
i suggest even jumping rope for 10 min will be hard for you, you dont even realize it!...jogging too is the best...for the lungs if u ask me!
good luck!

Reading all these comments have made me feel so unhealthy! I am also very lazy since i have left school and started college i dont have time to do anything! I have just come out of hospital and after christmas or even now i want to turn over a new leaf and become a bit more of an excersiser!! I have a tredmill and rowing machine in my garage but i never use it i am scared to join a gym as i am obviously not as healthy as everyone else and just feel people will be looking at me. I know i shouldn't worry about what ppl think but i do! I work on my stomach muscles at home everyday and feel like a have achieved something by doing them, but compared to all you guys that is peanuts! Do you feel a bit trapped and guilty, like you know you should be excersing but dont know where to start or cant seem to get yourself motivated kim!?

The bike and the treadmill are fine I usually ride the bike for a minimum of 20 minutes, I usually shoot for 30 minutes. Everybody has given you great ideas like doing activities you like and having a workout partner, but ideas do not address your problem. Your problem is discipline and motivation, I don't think I need to explain motivation to you we all know why we need to exercise. It's the discipline part that is most important. Doing your workout on those days when you don't feel like it is the discipline I am talking about if you can get that you will be doing a lot better.

Thanks everyone for your input. I guess it all varies on what you like to do. Getting a work out partner sounds like a great idea. We do have a rec center here at school, and since I have to pay for it tuition-wise, I might as well take some advantage of it right? I am in the process of putting together a schedule for next semester, and maybe I'll do a little work out while I'm at home for Christmas break.

In regards to that question, the answer is, somewhat I guess. Everytime I go for a doctor visit, he always asks me about my activity level...I say it's good, but I guess it's really not. The most active thing I do is walk to my classes or the cafeteria, and for one class it's on the 3rd floor, so I'm always pretty outta breath by the time I get up there. Like Dan said, it's mainly my motivation and discipline that needs help. I'm def gonna try getting my activity up. And it seems like almost anything will help. I was just never sure what was really good for helping out the lungs, and I guess just about every activity is. LOL, please excuse my ignorance on this topic. I feel so lazy knowing that everyone else does some kind of exercise, and maybe just that will change my lack of motivation. Thanks everyone!
