Exercise

Just to add.....exercise increases red blood cells which helps you fight viruses and infections and also increases cardiovascular endurance. If I happen to skip two days in a row from the gym, I feel crappy within the week. It's like now that I woukout on a regular basis, I can feel a difference if I skip out on just a day! Which I guess it's good, it makes me really have to be a gym rat! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

although as mentioned you cant 'beat' a lunf infection with excercise I have beat many colds/flus that would normally have =an exacerbation with excercise. I believe it fires up my immune system and also helps get everything (mucous) moving so it cant find a place to rest and cause and infection.

That in conjunciton with the hgiher lung function and other benefits mentioned have led to an overall decrease in lung exacerbations for me so while I may not 'beat' a lung infection it doe do a great job at avoiding teh conditions that lead to them in the first place.

I didn't read all the other posts but........

When I went to get my last dexa-scan (body x-ray for bone density) after working out at Curves for 1 year, my bones are actually better now than what they were. So weight bearing exercise actually helps strengthen bones.

So I'm not sure about infection stuff but I know it's good for the skeleton and that's worth it to me.

its hard to say whether or not u can beat an infection off, but surely you can shorten the duration of it. if you are growing tons of pseudo or cepacia, or what have u, you probably won't be able to beat that w exercise alone. but, at the end of your tuneup, if did incorporate exercise your pfts would definitely be higher. thus cleaning your lungs out much better and buying lots more time till your next tune up was needed.
research the benefits of exercise on the immune system. its amazing. the good hormones that exercise produces helps fight off colds and infections. also the right exercises strengthen all the muscles around the rib cage which help our breathing, and even our pfts.
if you look at some of the longest lived cfers...most of them were runners or athletes of some sort. that alone gives me motivation to keep going.
i was surprised to learn that you don't have to stop exercising while sick either. its good to keep going.
if you haven't started a program yet, its good to start slow and build up. lifestyle changes like walking in stead of using elevator, ect..things like that are great. but what will really build stamina and pfts is continuous 'real' exercise that goes on for 45 mins or more.
