Experiences with Gout?

Some of you know that I had a bum finger for a while. Originally I thought it was arthritis, but over the days after the initial notice of the problem my entire pinky (only one finger) became extremely swollen & sore, yet the redness stayed at the first knuckle. I put it off & put it off. It finally went down in swelling & the pain just returned to the first knuckle while the redness still remains. Come to find out that it is gout (or so they think). The problem is that gout comes from too much uric acid in your system which is usually induced by ingesting certain foods. I cant recall anything that I had eaten out of the ordinary except for fish one night which had been lacking from my diet. I cant remember exactly when we had that versus the onset of my finger problem. Of course my memory is not good short term so maybe I am forgetting something. Once you have gout, you tend to be prone to flare ups. There is no "cure" for it except keeping an eye on your diet & treat flareups with anti inflammatories which in worse cases would include steroids. Has anyone actually been diagnosed with Gout or experienced it with anyone else. They can do a test of the site to determin if there are the "usual" crystals that develop which causes the inflammation, but at this time there is no swelling. If it flares up again I will have them test the area of the joint. Just curious if others have dealt with it!

Hey Melissa,

Its Emilee just not signed in. Anyway I have never heard of gout so I am sorry I cant help you with that but it makes me curious. So do you have to go on a special diet? Will it go anywhere besides your fingers? Anyway just wondering

Hiya!
I'm VERY new to this site, because of a VERY dear friend whose daughter had a lung transplant on 10/4/05. She's travelling a very bumpy road right now, but i have faith that she'll heal and be back to us.
Your queston about gout caught my eye ... I had a gout attack on my big toe, right foot, on my birthday two years ago (10/01/03). It was the single most painful thing I've ever experienced, but I lived through out, and have never had a repeat attack.
I studied alot about gout; diet has alot to do with it.
I also discovered that taking meds can cause an attack. I immediately stopped taking my water pills (THZ I think) ... and I truly believe that was the single most effective relief I had. Knowing as I do that Lasix is often adminstered for CF Lung Transplants, possibly that had to do with your gout attack?
Please take care of yourself!
God Bless ...
Carol

Upon further research I have found that a lot of things can trigger Gout. Meds, foods, lack of natural enzymes, low postassium etc etc etc. It is most common in the big toe, but can affect any joint usually one spot at a time (why I dont know) & if the uric acid is bad enough it can also cause kidney stones. There are different meds to lower uric acid in your system if diet alone doesnt work, but there is no way to eliminate it all together because it is a natural response to foods etc. As far as it traveling.....we have to see. It might never come back or it might return in the same finger or different places. Kind like CF you never know for sure! LOL
