Explosive Bowel Movements

Does anyone else's child have these?? Is it just a sign of malabsorption and maybe enzymes need adjusting or is it something else? I was wondering if it could be a sign of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)? It runs in the family... Thanks.

My daughter used to get them as well and once we got the enzymes regulated they stopped. My husband has Ulcerative Colitis and I have always wondered if there is any relation (ie-a symptom that a carrier may have).Talk to your clinic and tell them what is going on, and they may adjust the enzymes to see if it helps.Heather

Explosive?? Not sure if that is what you'd call it - but even at his maximum enzyme dosage we had serious stool problems with my 3 year old son (very loose and foul... yuck!) Then a few weeks ago we took milk away from him completely (at the time he was only drinking fat free milk but still had trouble). We did not take milk products away (butter, cheese, etc.). You know what - then he ended up constipated and had a prolapse (yuck yuck)! Since then I have been cutting down his enzymes. After months and months of trial and error (and doctor consultations) we are almost certain that it is the milk that is giving him trouble. The doctors say he shows no symptoms of milk allergy or lactose intolerance (as lactose free milk still gives us trouble) and are completely perplexed as to what the milk problem could be. I don't know the scientific reasoning behind it - if it is CF related or something else, but the milk is what is causing or stool sorrows (whole milk - never.... then they would definitely be classified as explosive).Something you might want to try. I know that milk is a good source of fat and calories but you need to know the source of your problem. You may want to talk to your doc about taking milk away for any great length of time to make sure that your child is getting enough calcium. Hope you figure it out. We have been quite frustrated trying to firm up our son's bowels. But it looks like we have finally figured it out.Good Luck!J

Does he eat greasy foods? I notice having these type BM's when I've eaten greasy foods & not remembered my enzymes.

HiMY son also had explosive bowel movements. I would have to bring a change of cloths for him when we went out . Just in case. We figured out what was causing it with him. He was doing a lot of grazing. Drinking 2oz here 4 oz there. I think I would just heat a bottle and enzyme him when ever he made a noise lol! Just paranoid about the whole weight issue. Any way when he turned 8 months they uped his enzyme dose (2 ultrase) and I start to feed him every 2-3 hours. Things just sort of worked themselves out and now he goes maybe 3 times a day but never like before. Wishing you luck but Im sure things will be ok.
