failed glucose test

I failed my 3 hour GTT and have been on the GD diet for just over one month. It was very overwhelming at first. I am a pretty healthy eater but suddenly having to watch what I eat after a lifetime of being able to eat whatever was a bit upsetting. I have been able to control my blood sugar with diet and exercise. My weight gain has slowed way down but my OB and CF doctor are fine with that since I am on the same weight gain track as I was when pg with my daughter and did not have GD.
My health insurance covered the meter and all the supplies so that may be something you would like to look into. If you do have to pay out of pocket for meter and such, I have a Rite Aid brand meter and lancets that you are welcome to have. I bought it a few years ago after I tested borderline for CFRD. I used it a few times and that stopped. Now I have the new meter my insurance covered.
So, if you have a Rite Aid near you, you could have my meter and would "just" have to buy the test strips. Let me know! Also please free free to ask me any question about all of this GD stuff!

Hi Candice,

In addition to charting your sugars write down everything you eat and when you eat it too. That will give you an idea of which foods do what to your blood sugar at certain times per day.

I never took the GTT because as soon as I got pregnant it was obvious I was diabetic. Once I started testing my sugars I also started on insulin because they were so out of whack. As much as I too, hate needles, insulin was a godsend. I also bought this little book called CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate guide. It was small enough to fit in my purse and I was able to count carbs with it (carbs = sugar) Carbs were my enemy when I was diabetic. Too many carbs with too little protein sent me into vicious high and low circles.

I got my meter for free by contacting AccuCheck directly. AccuCheck is the only meter that isn't dependent on oxygen saturation. That's why hospitals always use AccuCheck, so if you don't have that brand, contact the company. As long as you get an Rx for the test strips and lancets they'll send you a meter for free. In fact I was refilling my test strips with my pharmacy (grocery store Pharmacy where I get most of my Rx's) and it turns out my 3 year old meter is being phased out, so the pharmacist handed me a new meter and new strips/lancets. (the meter was free)

Diet and exercise will definitely help your blood glucose, but don't be worried if you need insulin too. I used the humolog insulin pen, 31g. 1/2" needles, the smallest on the market! You'll do what you have to do to keep baby healthy. Good luck and keep us posted.

The mini ravioli has protein in it, slowing down the absorption of sugar. The juice they give you to drink is just carbs/sugar. It's purposefully a stress test to see how well you handle sugars. Protein will always help your numbers be lower. That's a good thing if you can control it with diet alone. That's actually good news! I'm glad! Good luck.
