Fecal sample?!

I'm in lockup for the first time with this dr and he's done a few things that have kinda gotten under my skin, like wanting to go investigate whats going on with my sinuses, he wants me to keep up with a spit cup for show and tell, he expects me to be up and dressed every morning when he comes around to do rounds, several things like that and in all reality its probably good things. I don't really need to be laying around all day but there isn't anything to do and I would rather be comfortable in sweats and tshirt than "actually dressed" All this to say, his methods aren't quite what I'm used to and he's all about "looking for trouble" I've never had any trouble with my sinuses but he wants to play with them, I've never weighed a whole lot and have never had any success gaining weight but its never been a problem and he's all over me about it and now he has ordered a fecal sample test "just to see if there's anything there" I understand his thnking, if there is pseudomonas in the lungs its likely to be in the GI tract and it could cause bleeding. I haven't had any GI trouble and now he wants to play with my poop. I don't see where there is anything to validate these tests. I haven't talked to him about it just what he told the nurses when he ordered the tests. I will see him tomorrow and ask about it but thought I would get some other opinions. Is he over the top?

I've had to give samples over the years... its not unheard of. Let him get his sample if you haven't had much success gaining weight its a good first step to find out how much you are actually taking in from what you eat. Spit cup is pretty normal just so they can see what you are bringing up. As far as being up and dressed I don't see how he can force it on you but I do understand his logic.

He wants the fecal test to check for lipids. You said you are underweight, so he's checking to make sure your digesting things well. What exactly is it that he wants to do with your sinuses? As far as being up and dressed in the morning, I'd tell him to piss off.

I don't have any idea what he's looking for in my sinuses, but had a cat scan done, I would imagine I'll know more tomorrow about what he was after and what all he found up there. I'm sure he won't be totally thrilled, I get some interesting stuff down every few days and there will be a little bit of blood in it about half the time (but its coming from my nose not lungs) He also wants me to start doing sinus rinses which I can tolerate that but its going to take some mastering of the technique. So far my experience with that could be compared with waterboarding. For the time I'm relegating that to during a shower, theres only so much of a mess I can make in there.
As for the out of bed and dressed, I plan on continuing my routine of wake up whenever the first person comes around to bother me, go back to sleep, wake up for morning breathing treatment and breakfast then snooze till lunch. In the afternoon I have no problem doing what I'm doing now. Wearing basketball shorts and a tshirt sitting in the chair using the bed table as a work surface for studying/facebook/whatever projects etc. but he can keep dreaming if he wants to come in and find me dressed for public (I don't wear shorts in public, nobody wants to see these skinny, hairy, white legs)
I swear he's going to drive me to the point that I dread the sight of a sample cup. Theres only one thing I can think of that would be worse to have to put in a little clear cup. And we're just not going THERE

Well then they probably saw some swelling and perhaps even blockage on your sinus CT. The rinses are a good idea and they might have you do antibiotic rinses once they get the sensitivity studies back. Having said that, if I were you I would ask to be referred to an ENT who deals with a lot of CF patients. My ENT surgeon is fantastic and very knowledgeable about CF, as the CF center refers their patients to her. An ENT surgeon would better know is surgery was or was not indicated and it might help you out quite a lot.

I guess if I were you, I would be grateful my doctor gave a crud enough to investigate things, to be proactive and that he or she cares enough to try to keep you in the best possible care. I think it is amazing that they want to investigate each thing .. I went a long time with seeing specialist that only cared about their specific specialty
meanwhile no one cared enough to try to link everything together.

As far as wanting you to be dressed.. umm like dressed as in jeans and stuff? I would for sure not do that.. I barely do that at home.. I have been on IV's for six months now and you will be hard pressed to find me all dolled up these days..... I consider showering,, brushing my teeth and blow drying my hair major wins for the day!

yeah, the dressing part would not go over well with me either. I'm with Jenn, I barely dress at home. If I could go out in public with my PJ's and "comfy" clothes, I would! I hate jeans and only wear them if I am going outside of the homestead lol. Otherwise, it is sweats soft PJ's. I am totally all about comfort.
As far as ordering tests.....I agree that he probably wants to see how much fat is being passed through your GI tract as you don't gain. He may tweak your enzymes depending on the results of that test. The spit cup, that is common as well. My doc asks me how much I am bringing up, a cup is just an easy way to quantify the amount of sputum.
It sounds like your doc is just being thorough as he is new on your case and wants objective data, which translates into tests and more tests to back up your symptoms/complaints. My doc is just like that, if I say I feel pain in my kidneys, he will order ultrasounds and urine tests to see what is going on there is there is indeed a problem. It actually would bother him if he didn't check it out for completeness sake. The good thing is, if there are problems, your doc will find them and be able to address them.

Hang in there, hopefully you will be out of club Med soon and back to your old self!

Hey Robert,
I agree with the others. Sounds like he is checking everything out .. The rinses are great to keep things in good shape. I would ask for a Styrofoam cup, so that you cant see inside it, thats what my RT gives us. As for getting dressed, he is nuts lol
Feel better <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> joni

Sorry you're in lock up. Sounds like your doc is trying to be very thorough. Jordan is the same way when they want to investigate. He says he's fine, and doesn't want to look for trouble. They are just trying to help though.

As for getting dressed, I'd tell him to forget about it. The first thing I do when I get home is put on pj's or sweats. Even if I know I'm getting out again later, I'm gonna be comfy while I'm home. Take care, and I hope you're home soon.
