Feeding Tube Questions

Anna's post reminded me that I never mentioned enzymes in my previous post...

We use kuzyme, an enzyme made f or night feedings. It is mixed in the bag with the fourmula before we start her night feeding. Simple, and no waking up to keep giving it to her like I had feared before learning a bout the tube!

My kids were loosing weight and couldn't gain it back. Josh was always very low on the chart (between 0-5) but was off the chart when we finally started the tube feeds. Jesse started off at 50 and got down to 10%.

They have gained to point where Josh is on the chart (3%) and Jesse is around 30.

They each take enzymes before and after the feeds. We also use Viokase a powdered enzyme in the feed.

My son got his tube March 1, 2007. He was at the 17th percentile. He kept losing and gaining a pound for about 1 1/2 years. He is NOT an eater. He will eat a few bites and say he is done, and then continue to run around and run the calories he just ate off.

It was a hard decision to make, but I am glad we went with it. It really isn't that big of a deal.

As far as enymes, we give before his 9 hour nightly feed and then after his feed. Interesting others mentioned about the powdered enzymes, this has never been mentioned to us, I will ask our doctor about. Since he has not gained any weight for the last few months. Total since March he has gained 10 pounds and pretty much staying at that weight.

Good luck with your decision,

My son Parker has not had a feeding tube as yet. He is 9 and his best weight ever put his BMI in the 17% range. He has been below 10% for a while and this month at or below the 1% range. I think the only reason his doctor has not insisted on a feeding tube was because Parker's mom and I would stare at him with this "no surgery for our son please" look in our eyes. I asked about it and the Doctor jumped at the opportunity to tell me about how it is necessary. We go to see him 1/4/08 to set the surgery for the tube. I now am kicking myself about not doing it sooner. Just about every adult w/CF I have talked to on this site will remark about how they were glad they did it when they were younger and many do not need it now when they are in their 20s or 30s. Good luck with this decision.
