Feeling sick

In the last 10 days or so, I have been feeling sick. I get tired very easily, and am short of breath. My lungs hurt from time to time, a dull pain below my shoulder blade, which worsens in certain positions. I have coughed up some really ugly mucus. Dark green/brown. I have coughed this up over the last few months, on different occasions. In the last months, I haven't felt totally ok, I partly think it's becasue of the very warm weather we have had here in Spain. But at my last hospital visit, about 2 weeks ago, my ptfs were good.

My doctor now has put me on two kinds of oral antibiotics, septrim and actira. I haven't had any fever at all. But night sweats I have had some of (which always happens when I get sick).

I have stayed home from work, all last week and today also, but tomorrow I'm going in. When I am at home, I kind of operate in a very low gear, if you know what I mean, but when I go out (I went to the doctor today) and did some shopping, I get really exhausted, lungs ache and I sweat.

Can anyone realte to this? I just think it's a bit strange that I don't have a fever. Could this be e.g. pleurisy?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Gungild,

Sorry you are not feeling well. Did your drs. do a sputum culture ? How bout a chest x ray ?

If you do not start to feel some improvement from the oral abx or if you start to feel worse again after the oral abx course is finished I would make a dr appt , ask for cultures , x ray & possible IV tune up ..

Ditto what Joni said about the sputum culture...that could clarify if your issue is bacterial or perhaps APBA or something else. Make sure they test it for regular bacteria, acid-fast bacteria (slow growing and night sweat-causing), and fungus.

Shivers and night (or day) sweats means a low-grade fever in my opinion. It might just be a little higher than your norm, but if you had bloodwork, I bet you'd have a high CRP and sed rate--two indicators of inflammatory response/infection fighting. But bloodwork is not necessary really.

Your doc is likely thinking, if this antibiotic combo works, then we likely know the culprit. If it doesn't then we'll try something else or do a sputum culture.

The pain, shortness of breath, fatigued and weak feeling are all very typical of an infection/inflammatory response. I get pain at the focus of the infection--it has been radiographically confirmed countless times. My experience with pleurisy has been that the pain is all-consuming the first few days, and dulls slowly over time and with anti-inflammatories.


If you are permitted to take ibuprofen, take it. It will reduce the inflammation in your lungs a bit which might allow the abs to do their job better, too.
