Fev1 question

Hi guys I had some question about my sons Fev1 numbers. He had a clinic appointment today that went well. The only thing he said that my sons Fev1 (I think that is it) has been dropping since last March. It has gone from 110 down to 80 now. He said his pft. line is right on top of the normal line. I asked if there was anything we can do to make the number go back up and he said his breathing treatments. He does these religiously. I was surprised and exhausted since we had left for the hospital at 9 am for another appt. and didn't get home to 4:30 in the afternoon and didn't think of questions about this until I got home. So I was wondering what exactly does this mean? What if his number drops at the next visit? Does this just mean he is in the abnormal range and not a big deal? He has not cultured anything in the past except staph and h fluenza. He is not coughing any more than usual either. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks, Janelle

I am not doctor, but would think there would be an underling reason for the dramatic drop. You don't say how old your son is so this suggestion may not be for you(where you live can also be a factor). If he is doing his treatments then I suggest something else to as therapy. Get a trampoline, years ago I watched my numbers go up after a hospital visit at a checkup 3 months later. I have been told 10 minutes on trampoline is like running a mile, and most kids will stay on it longer than that.

The 110 and 80 look like percentages. Take a look at this discussion forum to better understand them: http://forum.cysticfibrosis.com/threads/51373

i agree with the comment above -- exercise is a really good supplement to breathing treatments. Do they test his sputum for infections? Sometimes a drop in lung function can be related to a new bug or an old one coming back.

I hope you can get his results back up!

My daughters dr's like her to be at her baseline and if it drops any at all they are watching her and if were to drop that much they would either admit her for a tune up or figure out the problem. There has to be a reason for the drop. I would question the dr harder.
