FEV1

Any of the PFT functions can be over 100%.

Yes as someone mentioned, PFT numbers are based on age, height, sex, weight, race and then compared to others in that same "bracket".

Well as in all of life, some people are below average, others are average, and others are above average.
Someone with CF of course over time most ofen goes well below average. Most doctors will start talking lung transplant with their patient at about 30% FEV1, so that the patient can get use to the idea, think about it, start researching etc. You don't decide over night you want new lungs.

My sister after getting new lungs had a new FEV1 of 208%!!!!! Obviously her lungs were either bigger, more capacity that someone of her same stature would blow.

Ok, I have a question. My ds is almost 8. His pfts are always in the "normal" range. Worst ever was like 85%, best ever was 126%. He is usually well over 100. My question is this - two appts ago, ds's was 126% but last appt it was down to 96%. He was junky at the time (mostly sinus related). His dr was not at all concerned because the 96% was still in the upper end of "normal" range. But, it was much lower than ds's previous appt and lower than his average (usually around 112%). The 85% was a one time fluke during a really bad sinus infection. Anyone else not have their dr be concerned about such a drop just because it's still well within the "normal" range???? Thanks!

When I was younger, my doc never did anything when my FEV1 dropped. He would give them a chance to go up on their own. I think if his FEV1 don't increase the next appointment I would express your concern to the doc. My FEV1 bounce all over the place. My doc only gets concerned when they stablize at a low FEV1 for a period of time. Then he takes action. Good Luck.

Just about anything can make the pfts drop a bit. The problem really lies when it is a huge drop or continues to drop. I wouldnt worry at this point, but if things havenet improved or if they became worse I would definitely address it!
