FEV1

Yep, exercise is the ONLY thing that I've changed that has had a marked improvement on my FEV1. The more intense and regularily I did cardio, the higher my numbers went. Its not an overnight thing though. It took a couple of years for me to see a steady increase.

And, I can't remember a time I've missed a single vest or neb treatment or my meds. I'm really OCD about it all, so I take all my meds and treatments as I should.

Basically, I'm with many on this board in attributing exercise to bringing up my lung health and overall health. Other treatments and meds have come and gone with no change, but exercise is AMAZING!!!

Jerry Cahill is a prime example of how exercise is soo important. The man is 50 years old, waiting for a double lung tx, but still exercises to keep himself as healthy as possible. Not only does he exercise, but he prefers it outside & does marathons etc using O2. MY doctor has told me that medically they have exhausted the ability to improve my lungs. NOW its up to me and exercising to get anything else out of them that can be gotten.

Exercise and compliance with my drug and physio routine coupled with my hypertonic saline trial (yep i am one of the Aussie surfers to come up with this stuff) which i have been on for 4 years now has turned my life around. fev1 from 33% to around 60% over the four years!!! i hate this one because i am a night owl but plenty of sleep helps greatly, and the earlier i get to bed the better, say 10pm. i got to a point where i had basically given up and then through the help and inspiration of someone very special to me i decided to grab the bull by the horns and start fighting daily...and what a great learning time that was. i now walk 7km most days, including soft sand at the beach and up a massive fu**ing hill! i also swim 1.5 to 2 km each day. i remember the day i first started to exercise i walked about 600m slowly and was stuffed. my first swim session i swam 4 laps of a 25m pool with a break in between and was exhausted!! so look how far i have come now in just two years of continual exercise!! and i must say the body looks dem fine too, wink. i hope this encourages someone to start a new way of living with CF. cheers Blacky

My FVC has increased to over 100% but my FEV1 is still EXACTLY the same at 56%! How is this possible? I feel a million times better than I did a year ago but I'm still rated as being exactly the same. And how is it possible to have such a huge difference between these numbers?

I'm sure there are technical reasons etc. but I usually ask my Dr. to break it down like it was going to be a 10 second spot on Entertainment tonight. He said he can tell how good my lungs actually are by my FEV1 and how good I FEEL by my FVC.

I have to say when he said that he also showed me my track record for the last 2 years and showed how although my FEV1 hadn't changed my FVC had ( a number I previously greatly disrespected) and dang if the man wasn't right. I had been sick in March and there it was FVC...plummeted....Most recently in July.....FVC climbing to heights it hasn't seen in quite a bit (Thank you hypertonic saline) and me feeling pretty good. Maybe there is something to it who knows.

Mostly I stick with if I feel good I'm happy. It is one thing to be sick but man feeling sick is an entirely other kettle of crap.

Take the good
