FEV1

So, lately there have been a few posts on how to increase our PFTs and the vast majority have been suggesting exercise. I hate exercise, I really do. Call me a lazy bum I guess! Since 2004 I have been stuck in a rut with regards to my FEV1. It was at 56% for 3 years. Never increasing, never decreasing, just always that unsatisfying number (it's enough to make you crazy!). I was trying a bunch of treatments new to me (Tobi, diets, etc.) and still 56%. Anyways, to make a long story longer, after reading over and over again on this site about the benefits of exercise, I dragged myself outside to get to it. I have been running for 1 month and 1 day, and I had an appointment today. I FINALLY busted the rut (and in the good direction) with a whopping 62%! Ok, not really whopping, but I was pumped! And after only a month! Now I'm actually motivated to get off the couch. Anyways, I guess I just want to say thanks to everyone on the site who keep preaching the benefits of exercise and everyone else on the site in general, because we all rock! And it's great that we are all fortunate enough to share in each other's suggestions, motivation, and support.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My husband is in a similar situation--he has been at 53% for a couple of years and I keep telling him to exercise but he says that he hates it. I am going to show him your post and maybe it will help motivate him.

Adrienne,
I too am a lazy bum and stuck in a rut personally and FEV1 wise. Like you, thanks to the preaching, I'm doing more, sitting less. I have a bike now. and have just started to bike ride, albeit short trips, but it's a start. I'm going to be starting yoga at home, for stretch, strength and toning. (to my friends that have heard this over and over, I really am, I promise - but right now I'm still sore from the bike ride and wore out from dr appts....) I'm am a big blob right now, but hopefully with time I will have more stamina, AND improve my Fev1.

thanks for the post...keep up the good work.

Thanks for the post...It has motivated me to exercise more regularly (no matter what excuse I can come up with). And, like you, this time I REALLY mean it!

You know what motivates me to exercise?

Chris (Chaggie) - he works full time at a big time job, plays hockey a few nights a week, and still goes to the gym. The man is older than Father Time and has an amazing FEV1. It's not accident in my mind.

After talking to him, I realize I have 0 excuse not to get my butt in gear. I'm not perfect, but the past 6 weeks I've been consistently working out (before that I'd do it for a few weeks, stop for a few weeks, and start again).

On that note, I'm off to work out. Use it or lose it should be our collective CF theme.

Oh yes, and I hate exercising with a passion. I despise it. I really hate it. Did I mention I hate it?
