FINALLY DID IT

As some of you know I have been battling some lung issue for the past 3 years. The past two weeks have been miserable! Can hardly breathe and coughing up stuff constantly.

Every since Courtney was diagnosed I have wondered if I too have CF. I had weight issues growing up (people thought I was anorexic) and seemed to always have some type of chest cold.

Things have really gone down hill the past three years.

I went to the doc today and said I wanted a sweat test and a DNA test. The doc is checking with my insurance company to make sure it is all covered, and I should have the tests done within the next week.

I am relieved, but scared. I didn't think I would be this nervous about the tests.

Any advice would help!

Also....she put me on Advair.....anyone else take this?? The powder gets all stuck in my mouth and I feel like none of it is getting to my lungs.

Thanks

Seana

Ah i know exactly how you feel, just go with the flow, try not to worry about it.

I wish I could say more to help.

I hope you are healthy. Here is a tip for the advair

Hold your head up straight. Try not to have a forward head drop. That means keeping your neck long. When you are ready to inhale, relax your throat and inhale. Some powder might get on your tongue but most of it should be inhaled.

Then rinse your mouth out because you can get thrush if you let the powder stay in your mouth.

I use Biotene mouth wash after each advair dose and I have a pink tongue and never getting thrush since I am using biotene.

Give the Advair a few days and you will feel the difference.

I'm glad you chose to get it done Seana, and I hope all goes well
for you.
As for the Advair, I'm going to say pretty much the same thing that
Risa did, except when I use it I exhale all the air out of my lungs
first and then inhale the drug. That way it gets deep down
into the bases and I'm able to inhale more of the medication.
As mentioned, some powder will stay in your mouth, in which
case you can either rinse with water very well or brush you teeth,
which is what I do.
Here's wishing you luck!

My daughter doesn't like Advair either, because of the powder issue. Our doc switched her to Flovent -- she likes it a lot better and it has improved her PFT's. I know there is a difference in the ingredients -- I think Advair has both the long acting anti-inflammatory as well as the short term bronchial dilator. And the Flovent may be just the long acting anti-inflammatory -- I could be all wrong about that -- someone may be able to correct me.... but my point is, if you cannot handle the Advair, ask your doc to switch you to Flovent, but be sure to ask for a spacer too.

About getting the tests -- that's great that your doctor is going forward with it, but I totally understand being scared -- I have often wondered how I would feel if I was diagnosed now too (not that I have any symptoms) but occasionally my mind wonders to what it must be like to be faced with that information from the CF persons perspective (of course all I know is the parent perspective)

I do hope you get properly diagnosed and treated, cf or not.
Will keep you in my prayers and thoughts and I will be
anxiously awaiting your test results. Good Luck!
Advair is a great drug. I use it twice a day and rinse my
mouth out 3 times after each use. This is very important to
do so that you do not get thrush which can be painful and difficult
to treat.

Thank you all for the well wishes and the advice on the Advair!

Kylie....you cracked me up with your post. I can picture you saying "I DON"T THINK SO....she's 13".......lol.

I have not heard back from the doc yet, so I figured if she does not call today I will call her tomorrow. I am nervous about getting the tests, but I also want to know so I can deal with it.

Thanks again!

I started Advair a few months ago, from what I have been told it is Flovent and Seravent combined into one. The docs told me to wash my mouth out everytime I take the Advair-I have and it hasn't bothered me at all!

Is the sweat test really accurate for those who are older and show
relatively few CF symptoms?
Well,

The doctor just called. She can not guarantee that insurance is going to cover the tests, but I told her I want to go ahead with them anyways.

I will be having the sweat test, DNA test, and the fecal fat test.

I will pick up the lab work tomorrow and have the tests on Friday.
