Well, yesterday was a very interesting day filled with many mixed emotions.

We walked in the door, and I handed the lady at the front desk all the paperwork, GYN records, and charts from the past three months. Hershey Medical Center sent lots of CF records as well.

Eventually, the doctor came back from lunch, and Jake and I were brought back to his office. Firstly, he went over all the paperwork that I filled out. Then, he looked at my age and the amount of time that we had been trying. He said, "There is something surely something missing here." He looked at my charts and confirmed that I DO ovulate. He also wasn't overly concerned with my CM either.

Instead, he looked at my whole slou of surgeries...You could see the look of disapproval on his face. "So you had a burst appendix 14 years ago?" Me: "Yes, I actually was walking around with it burst for 1 week. I never had the pain. I only remember throwing up 6-8 times a day, losing 15 pounds until I was down to 85 lbs. from 100 lbs. one week prior, and a fever of 105 F. I went to my CF doctor you claimed I picked up a viral infection and sent me home on Cipro. At 1 week later, I was even sicker and in/out of it. I was admitted into the ER and had a STAT ultrasound. I still remember laying on the table and being asked my the tech, " Jenny, did you have your appendix removed? Your chart says you hadn't?" And that was that. I don't recall anything else from the whole admission. The only explanation why I was alive was that because I had CF the mucus held some of the poison intact, preventing it from spreading quicker throughout my body. If I didn't have CF, I would have died within 3 days!!! However, I was really bad. The surgeon said that I wouldn't have made it another 2 days if it had not been caught when it was..."

That pretty much put him in shock. He just sat there with his mouth wide open. After pulling himself together he asking, " You also stated that you had 3 feet of your colon removed? Why?" Me: "Well about 6 months after the appendix incident, my colon was narrowing. It was the same side that was original connected to my appendix. Nothing could pass through anymore. I couldn't go to the bathroom, was severly bloated, and half the time I ate, it came back up because it had nowhere to go. The doctors rulled out IBS, Krohn's, enzymes, and everything else. The only explanation was the burst appendix. As a matter of fact, my colon was so messed up that they couldn't assure me that they would have enough good colon to fix the problem. They expressed (as being wheeled into the OR) that I may wake up with a bag for the rest of my life. Thankfully, I had enough salvagable large intestine."

Again, he sat there mortified. The silence was pretty long...Finally, he says, " I am almost positive that you have blocked/damaged tubes!!! After all that surgery, your tubes are probably the problem!!!

He also stated that I would NEVER be able to get a laporscopy (sp?) due to all the abdominal surgery that I have had. He said that is why your old GYN doc left you on the pill because there is NO WAY we can do a lap on you. Your colon incision is 1 inch above the belly button, around, and down. The total incision is 3 inches long. We might hit adhesions if we did a lap. Huh...

Okay, time out! I know this outlook sounds gloomy but not actually. He too agrees that a pregnancy would be fine. I have had no problems at all abdominally since I was 15. I just may need additional scans, but he doesn't see anything that says that I shouldn't. He even stated that I wouldn't be at any higher of a risk (and depending on the pregnancy) may not be considered high risk after 4-5 months if things go well.

So overall, I finally have some idea of where to start. However, I do have many mixed emotions about what happened 12 years ago...I can't change anything but...What if ....How would you feel knowing that those surgeries may have left you sterile? We won't know the extent of the damage until we start the tests. He wants to do them between Day 6-11. Right now, I'm on Day 25 so I have to wait. Meanwhile, I have to get bloodwork, ultrasounds, cultures, and everything else. Plus, my husband has to donate. So we'll see. I just wanted to keep you all posted.

NOTHING WAS CF-RELATED!!! THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO YOU BUT NO ONE HAS THE PISS POOR LUCK THAT I HAVE!!!

I'm still soaking all this in, but-
did he say what the solution would be? How would you actually be able to get pregnant then?
You know, who knows, maybe this problem wouldn't end up being as difficult to remedy as the cf cervical mucus problem.

Hey Sweetie,

I actually forgot that there is a second component. The appendix component is on the right side as was the side of the effected colon. He thinks the right tube is pretty bad and maybe a lost cause.

However, the left side he doesn't think is as effected. Yes, it would be scarred some but not to the extent of the right tube.

Which leaves him to wonder if Jake's sperm is okay or not...Yes, it would take longer to conceive with only one good tube but still....

So there are two questions: *my tubes, *Jake's sperm

Now, I have to go through testing over the next 3 weeks maybe longer depending to find out to what extent my tubes are messed up. Also, we have to make sure that we aren't missing anything else like Jake's sperm.

The doctor thinks that IVF would still be possible. So yes, I could still get pregnant but not by IUI if my tubes or his sperm are the problems. If CM was the only problem, then IUI would be fine...However, my chance of IUI is looking much dimmer by the moment. He feels that if CM was my only problem, I still would have conceived by now after 19 months.

So, I guess we will see. My first diagnosis appointment is August 3rd at 11:30. I have to get a vaginal ultrasound, blood work, vaginal cultures, blood pressure, and weight. Then between Day 6-11 of my new cycle, I have to get a SIS (sonohysterogram) to check my uterus and a HSG (hysterosalpingoram) to check my tubes. These procedures MUST be done at the Reading Hospital. I'll probably go around Day 9 when my period is finally over. Jake will go for his screening next week on his day off since we live 1 hour from the clinic.

Well, I'll check back later today!

Jenny,
I am so happy to hear you are on the path to getting some answers. My appendix ruptured while I was being transported between hospitals for surgey. Thankfully my appendix was located in the wrong spot, it was up much higher than usual so there was no damage to my tubes. When we started to see the RE I had a HSG test to check my tubes and they were clear. I got pg right after the HSG test so maybe that will happen to you too!
Good luck and keep us posted!
