So tonight I have to break the news to my son that he is being admitted for the first time. I'm going to try to keep it as upbeat and "no big deal" as possible, but I also want to allow him to have his feelings. I'm sure he'll be upset, scared, and angry. He'll have a bronch and a PICC line while he is in and he has never had either one before. Uncharted territory for Andrew. However, he needs this. He hasn't been himself since May and I appreciate having a concerned, proactive doctor. Wish us luck.

Tonya, my son Josh was also 9 when he had his first clean out. It was very emotional for us. He took it in stride and did great, but we cried a lot before hand.

Don't be afraid to let him be sad and angry. It is overwhelming. Be honest with him about how you feel too. Its also scary for parents.

Will he have a lap-top when he goes in? That was huge for us.

Good luck, and don't forget to ask us any questions you or he might have.

That sucks!

BUT if he hasnt been himself since May then he needs it. The very first one and one after a long stretch of good health is never easy.

Making it seem like no big deal might be kind of hard, but making it seem like "this is how it is & we will get thru it OK" is good.

HUGS & Shout if you need ME for a change LOL!

I'm so sorry to hear that Andrew is going in-patient. I was a basket case when Alyssa went in, but I didn't have to tell her -- she was so young. I hope it goes well, it is such a sucky reality for CF kids!!
