First Neb Treatment

We would sometimes have to wait until Luke was asleep to do treatments --or at least really tired. He was only 3 months when we started, so I know it is not a very good comparison with your son being one already. We also boil the neb cups and we have boiled bubbles, but as others have said, the elastic will wear out quicker this way. We were told you can wash the masks in really hot, soapy water and it is fine, but that is a great idea to pour the boiling water over the mask. The thought behind doing it with the sterile water is probably that boiling the stuff might make it wear out quicker. Otherwise, I wouldn't see where that method would save any time or be any more sterile. We have never had a problem getting extra masks/neb. sets but if that is an issue, maybe that would be a reason to do it the sterilized water way. But we just boil the neb. stuff in the water.

Thanks so much everyone. I don't wish this on anyone, but it's reassuring to know that I am not alone & I've gotten such great information reading everyone's posts. On a positive note, Max did so much better this morning with the nebs. He doesn't like the elastic either, but did let me hold it to his face. I feel like we are getting a 2 for 1 on the Tobi since I seem to be breathing quite a bit of it too (making my lungs feel irritated).

I am so sorry you are going through this with your little one! I'm so glad he did better this morning. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> (I'm sorry it hasn't been so good for you, though.)

Emily flipped out doing her first neb treatments- initially, she was completely cooperative at the idea of putting the mouthpiece in her mouth; we let her choose between holding the mouthpiece or using a mask and even let her turn the compressor on and off before hooking it all up so she would know what it sounded like. Everything seemed fine- until she saw the steam coming out of the mouthpiece for her first session and she completely freaked out!! Nothing made a difference; she just cried through the first couple sessions until she realized that it wasn't going to hurt her. Fortunately within a couple days she was doing ok with it.

Hi there,

Our son started doing his nebulizer when he was six months old. I remember the first time I saw his little face smashed to that plastic mask I was so upset. The reality of everything really sunk in. The only thing I can say that has been key to getting our son to become great at his nebulizer is NEVER as much is you want to quit. My husband has been very firm with this is not an option this is what we do. Now, that he just turned two he sits on our laps and holds his mask to his own face. It's a big huge...huge step!

As far as sterilizing nebs........I threw out all my bubbles masks, I didn't like seeing part of the plastic in the hot water....Just didn't seem right! I then called Pari and they gave me a number to a Pari dealer. I then purchased five Baby Pari 3 BABY HARD PLASTIC MASKS, and 5 extra neb kits. I love it now.......I have seven neb sets, and I'm only boiling once a week. The biggest plus is switching to the PARI BABY HARD PLASTIC. I just wash all the parts to his nebs including the PARI Masks, and boild everything for 10 min. It's idiot proof for family that wants to help out. I just wrote this down in the cabinet where I store his nebulizer.

STEPS TO CLEANING NEBULIZER PARTS

1. Warm oven to lowest settting 170.

2. Fill Stock pan with hot water.

3. Take apart Neb completely

4. Wash all Neb parts and Mask in hot soapy water & Place on clean plate.

5. When water in stock pan begins to boil add all neb parts/masks and set timer for 10 min.

6. After nebs/masks have boiled 10 min. Take them out with tongs and place on paper towel lined cookie sheet. Place in oven....Turn off oven.......It will be nice in warm I there to help speed up drying.

7. Turn on oven light so you don't forget their in there.........I let them sit in there for two days to insure there completely dry...Then I place them individually in zip lock bags.
