first time on IVs

I'm on IVs for the first time ever and my doctor went ahead and sent me home to do them at home. So far it's been a catastrophy. I've only had the IV in one day and already had to have it changed because I didn't realize I wasn't suppose to flush the IV with the needle. Anyways on to my question. What do you do about yeast infections or to prevent them anyways. I'm already starting to get one and I was just wondering if I treat it will it come back before I finish the IVs

I've had really good luck with the Monistat 3. Three days of medicine helps keep things under control for the duration of the IV therapy. Another thing is to add some yogurt to your diet.

So sorry you're having the "itchies." I hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Sara,

Call your doctor. They can prescribe something. Now they have a prescription for that where you take one pill. That's it! One pill and it's gone! Yes, you may need to get a refill for that at some point depending on how long your on IVs.

In the meantime, I second lightNlife. If you like yogurt, try to have one a day while you're on IVs. Or go out and buy a probiotic (acidophilus) and take them while you're doing treatment. That's the active ingredient in yogurt, that you can buy and take as a supplement in pill form. That'll help it from coming back. It's not strong enough to take it away if it's already there though!!

Definitely do some probiotics!! Eat yogurt every day and also get a supplement. Yogurt alone is probably not enough to counteract the negative effects of the IVs. Adding a supplement will also get you a broader range of probiotics. For the record, I believe that stonyfield farms yogurt is supposed to be one of the best as far as probiotics are concerned. You can also get some kefir (at places like whole foods and trader joes) which is chock full of probiotics as well. Make sure the probiotic that you buy is in the refrigerated section of the health food store and has a "# CFU guaranteed till date on bottle" or something like that. Avoid anything that says it is guaranteed at time of manufacture.

As far as meds are concerned, I've had good luck w/ diflucan (the pill).

I'm extremely prone to yeast infections especially now while pregnant (and of course while on meds). The last 6 weeks or so I got wise and kept up with my probiotics and I've been basically yeast free since then.
