first time to be "sick" since dx

Katy developed a fever Saturday. Clingy, no appetite; no
other symptoms at all but she says her head hurts. We've
complicated our lives by changing pediatricians but that process
isn't complete yet so I called the cf doc's office to try to get an
idea about what to look for or when to be worried. The
cf doc called us back within 10 minutes (what an angel he is!) and
said to treat with Tylenol and also that basically we should handle
the situation just like we did before she was a cf kid.

Well that sounds great except that before she was a cf kid she
wasn't on every medication known to man. How in the world
could she be sick when she is on, among other things, Cipro and
Zithromax?

I feel like every time I get my feet back under me, something new
comes along to knock me back down; the initial dx; then culturing
for PA; then high liver enzyme; then genetic results (Double Delta
F508).

To me, fever plus head hurts in a kid that's been on antibiotics
for awhile = inoperable brain tumor or something crazy like that.
But she probably just picked up a virus at the preschool
on Friday. (made my self laugh just now - a line from
some Arnold Schwarzenager movie: "it's NOT a
tumor....)

sorry for the rant just needed to vent.

With CF kids its so hard to know what is CF and what is just regular kids stuff. Its normal for us think bad things first.

Your daughter could just be getting a cold or allergies, or it could be sinus pressure giving her a headache. I'm sorry, I forget how old Katy is, but you can give sudafed too for sinus. Its doesn't have very many interactions. ALso saline nasal spray to keep her nose hydrated. Ours is called Ocean Spray but there are others- its just salt water.

Hope she feels better!

KT's mom,

It is stressful when the little one's get sick. Unfortunately, you get zero protection from viruses from antibiotics. When Maggie gets a virus, we watch her VERY closely. We do very good hand-washing to prevent the spread of germs. Warm baths, tylenol, ibuprofen. Also, encourage fluids; this includes popsicles, broth basically whatever she wants. Fever can make you sweat so fluids and even salty snacks(to replace salt lost through seat). Our daughter is a pretzel addict. If Maggie starts coughing, we increase her neb(albuterol) and Vest therapy to 4 times a day(she already does it 3X day when well). Rest/naps all things you do for a non CF child. If my mom's gut intuition tells me to call the doc I do, especially when Maggie was really little cause she couldn't even tell me what was wrong.

Tell tale signs, I know warrant a call to the doc for Maggie are coughing at night, frequent coughing throughout the day, her cough(sick cough) has a certain sound to it that I know warrants a call.

I've always wondered, too how DS can get an ear infection or an upper respiratory infection when he's on keflex, tobi and zithromax, but he has. A couple of summers ago we were on vacation and he kept running a fever. Must've been a virus 'cuz I gave him tylenol and it went away after a couple of days. Last spring he got a nasty cough and ended up being put on cipro.

Hooked up with our new regular doc for Katy today who was kind
enough to do a quick white blood cell count, which was normal,
which makes us pretty sure it is just one of those 72-hours
viruses. Fever spiked to above 103 last night.
It was one of the nights when you sleep next to your
kid, fully clothed, in a three-point stance just in case you feel
the need to make a run to the ER. But fever is down to about
100 today.

But, the good news is that "It's Not A
Tooo-Muh". (sorry I can' let go of the Ahhnold movie
line; it has been a long-standing joke in our family).

Thanks everyone for the input. Am beginning to understand all
of the posts I've been reading about extra extra diligence about
germs, staying away from known sick people, etc.
