Hoping not to sound ignorant...but is it really necessary to sterilize the mask prior to the next inhaled therapy, providing one medication immediately follows the next?

Inhaled abx should be the very last thing done.

Re. the mask- I would tend to ask Katie's question as well- washing the cups & mask between meds would be important to remove med residue (some are especially sticky), but sterilizing wouldn't seem necessary until the next cpt session.

On the topic of sterilizing, it depends. Pulmo/DNase and HTS should NOT be done in the same neb. Actually Pulmozyme is supposed to always get its own neb cup b/c its molecules are particularly susceptible to binding, and once it binds with another med (even residue, you're sacrificing efficiency and effectiveness. If you can't give it its own neb cup, then yes, you should be sterilizing in between.

I think it was Amy (Saveferris) who once described it as "pulmozyme doesn't play well with others" -- it's totally true.

DD does Pulmozyme and TOBI, we have separate cups, but the same mask. I don't sterilize between, but do clean and wipe out the inside. We do Pulmozyme and vest, then after vest we do TOBI. Hope this helps!
