First Visit to CF clinic - what questions to ask?

My youngest ds age 11 is scheduled for an appt.on 5/21. He is supposed to have a chest x-ray and lung function test. We were supposed to see one of the Dr.'s but got a call from them last week and they had to reschedule and now we are to see a nurse practioner. I would have rather he see the Dr but really want to get in and hopefully get some answers. What questions and tests should we ask about at the appointment?

He does have asthma and allergies. The allergy dr. ordered the sweat test but said he really didn't think he had cf but needed to rule it out. I don't know the number as dr. left a message with older ds. He also had sinus surgery recently and had a polyp removed which returned by his follow up appointment with ent.

Ds is actually a little above average for height and weight but has complained about stomach aches and acid reflux.

Tia for any advice<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Are you saying your child has had a sweat test but you don't know the result? and you're going to a CF clinic but they've made your appointment with a nurse instead of a CF doctor? If that's where you are, I'd say the first thing is to find out what the test said and if it is in the inconclusive/negative range to discuss symptoms and find out if they want to order a full genetic panel to test further. A positive sweat test is pretty much positive for CF but a negative or borderline test is not always a firm conclusion.

Sorry I wasn't clear, yes the sweat test was positive, I just don't know what the number was. It was the allergy dr who referred us to the cf clinic. So I guess we still need genetic testing? Just not sure what to expect at appointment.

Also has anyone ever had a false positive sweat test?

If the sweat test if firmly positive, they might not order a genetic test or might just start with the "short" version instead of the full one that looks for the less common variants. Knowing the specific variants does not matter much or at all for treatments.

My son's first appt. upon diagnosis was with the full team at the CF clinic: Dr., Nurse, nutritionist, and social worker. And it took forever: probably a good 3 hours. Take snacks and something to keep busy with in case you get the full deal. They explained the various routine medicines and took blood and a throat culture along with the usual vitals to get the file started.
