Fitness goals

I'm a huge fan of working out, and make it a big part of my daily routine. I also find it helpful to set short term and long term goals to keep me motivated and working "toward something". I also find that talking about them with others keeps me accountable and moving forward with them.

SO... now that the slog of winter is ending, what exercise goals have you set, and how well is your progress going?

Here are mine:

I have registered for a Half Ironman Triathlon on July 1st, and would like to finish it in under 6 hours. (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run)

I will be doing several shorter races as part of my preparation, swimming 2-3 times per week, running 3-4 times per week, and biking 3-4 times per week.

Awesome! You won't find me doing a Half Ironman Triathlon in the near future....or ever. Way to go.

I have been running 3x/week, loving it. I want to start lifting light weights but am not sure what I'll get myself comitted to that. Hopefully I'll make myself start sooner then later. Once it gets warmer I'll start swimming laps in the pool. Can't wait for that. Summer is motivating in itself.

Keep on Chris. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Wow, A Half Triathalon. That's amazing. That's one thing I would love to give a try. I'm fairly healthy and get to the gym for an hour at lunch time during work. I find lifting weights helps me a lot, but I have to start doing more cardio too. Thank god the summer is just around the corner, rollerblading and biking will hopefully fill that void.

Any suggestions for easing into running?

Good luck on your Triathalon!

Thanks everyone!

Mynewfy and Scott -

I think its great you are both working out. I find that lifting helps me a lot, especially by preventing injuries, particularly to my lower back from biking and running.

Scott - if you are trying to get into running, just make sure to start small - using a run/walk mix is fine. Whatever your base tolerance is (be it running for a minute, walking for 2 minutes, alternating for 15-20 minutes or a 4 mile run) make sure that you build weekly mileage slowly but gradually. Do not make large jumps, and make sure to take at least one rest day every two weeks. Otherwise, you risk injury, etc.

There are a lot of beginning running resources and training programs out there... the fitness section of any bookstore would have several choices.

Good luck!!!

I am planning to start a blog on the site to track my weekly training... stay tuned!

Thanks Chris,

Good Advice from a veteran on running. If anyone ever has questions for weights, I'd be glad to field them.

Thanks again,

Scott

My Goals:

Run a 5K in under 23 minutes.
Run a 5 mile in under 42 minutes.

Challeging but reachable but that is what goals are supposed to be right? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

On a side note -- does anybody use the nike plus stuff? We need to get a CF challenge going. Reply here or PM me if anybody is interested.
