flu injection

I have had the same debate with my drs for the past 11 years...

I had my first flu injection when I was about 13years old and found that it was the sickest year I had ever had and swore off ever having the flu injection again...

when we moved and noteably I was sicker I was told that it was imperitive that I have the flu injection...

although every year I get the flu injection I end getting sick straight after the injection and then up getting the flu anyway (flu has been diagnosed via nasal thingy done, where they suck out secretion and send it away), I was told by my drs that it was a mere coincidence, and it was due to the fact that I was sick anyway...

so now that I am post tx I have to have the flu injection twice, one month apart..

and guess what, I still get disgustingly sick from having it, complete flu symptoms

I wanna know what everyones take on getting the flu injection is? and does it make you sick?

simple solution would be to try not having it, but considering I end up catching the flu at least twice a year, Im kinda not game not to have it...

I have the shot every year and have never gotten sick from it (knock on wood)... Weird that it would happen to you since they "claim" giving you the flu shot can in no way give you the flu....

I'd be interested in seeing what everyone else thinks. Sorry, I'm not much help.

You may well feel sick after the flu vaccine, but that does not compare to the permanent lung damage and illness that can arise from getting the flu. Thats the reason why cfers must get the vaccine, unless you want to play the lottery with your health...

No idea about post tx though, sorry

Its funny that you mentioned this, i alway's get sick from a flu shot but its only the initail first 2day's, than i'm over it.
But, yesterday at clinic my dd"s CF doc said she get's the flu shot every year and she is constantly sick, so this year she is doing a trial on herself and is not going to have the flu shot just so she can see if there is any differnece.
I actually rememder going into clinic last year every month and she alway's wore a face mask, because she was alway's sick.

Hope this helps.

funny enough when I was 13 and swore off getting the flu shot I remained well until the age of 20 when I started getting the injection again...

seems too coincidental to me...

I get the flu shot some years dont others depends on my health at time to get the shat. If im felling sick I dont get it Just makes me sicker if im feeling well get it and dont get sick. I think it speeds up any illness you may alredy have growing but wont cause initial illness.

I have only had the flu shot once and that was the only year that I had the flu. I will not have it again because that was the sickest I have ever been. That was 13 years ago.

The flu shot cannot make you sicker.....

Here's the scoop - pharmaceutical companies try to anticipate which flu strains will be present during the flu season... and they linclude these strains in the flu shot.

Often times, like bacteria, viruses can mutate. The flu is a virus and thus has the potential every year to mutate. If it mutates, and that mutation of the strain is not inlcuded in the flu shot then the flu shot won't work.

If you encounter a flu strain that is not in the shot they received, you'll get sick as if they didn't have the shot. Having the shot doesn't make anyone sicker.

People who say "oh I got the flu shot once and I got so sick that year. I haven't had it since and I never get sick" are using false causality. The flu shot they got that one year must not have covered the strain they encountered. And the years they didn't get the shot, they simply didn't encounter the flu virus.

The science is very straight-forward on flu shots.

Hope that clarifies. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Bottomline is that you should get a flu shot.... it's proven.

Amy, i understand what your saying, but what i was saying happened to me was that i only got sick the first two day's after recieveing the flu shot and was then well for the rest of time.

The doc's said its normal and it deos happen to some people, not all. For example, my husband has never gotten sick with.without a flu shot. We olny started getting them when our daughter was diagnosed, just as a precaution.

Everyone is different and will react differently to shots/medications etc.

My husband and I both had flue shots every year. I would sometimes have a slihtly red arm. He would sometimes run a slight fever. The docs thought his fevers were probably an allergic reaction. Neither of us ever got the flu.

BTW it's impossible to "get sick" from the flu vaccine. It introduces dead/inactive virus /virus antibodies into your system to make your body build up immunity against it. The problem is, that the flu virus is constantly mutating. So say they make a vaccine for the absolute most current most common flu virus that they have on say May 15 of 2006, by the time the flu vaccine gets to the population, the "most common" flu virus could have totally mutated into something completely different. Some say it's still valuable because, "you never know", or the current vaccines inactive flu/flu antibodies might still partially resemble whatever might try to infect you even if it mutated (and some protection is better than no protection), and you might be able to dodge it.

Then there are some in the more underground talk radio scene, who are extremely credible in the health field who say that vaccines in general, and some in particular (forget which ones, but I know they included the flu one also), directly cause serious health problems. Atleast one of them stated if you get X vaccine 5 times or more, your chance for contracting some serious diseases goes up way high. Now who knows if that is true or not, but i'm sure the feds aren't going to tell us that is so even if it is.

It's up to the individual to get the flu shot or not get it. Personally in my opinion, since we are all immunocompromised to begin with, and some of us are pretty bad off (not to mention the post tx peeps here), I feel it's in our best interest to get it every year, quite a while before the bug season really starts.

I also feel you can do yourself a tremendous bit of goodness by taking substances with known strong antiviral properties. Monolaurin + oregano oil is an amazing combo to one-two punch viruses and bacteria and other nasties you don't want. There are other substances out there with similar antiviral properties that are natural...Google is your friend, use some cranium elbow grease and spend some time looking into it, it could very well mean your life.

I have personally slacked on monolaurin due to it not being flu season yet (well, back a little while anyways), and I felt amazing on the OO + collistin combo, but I fully plan on taking the stuff in fairly heavy doses very soon due to trying to avoid getting massively sick due to the season, I recommend you guys do the same.

Oh definitely! I was replying to the original poster, sorry.

Getting flu-like symptoms after the 1st few days of the shot is totaly normal.

What I meant (which I guess was unclear) is that people who claim that the flu shot is useless because they get sick anyway.

I hope that's clearer now.

My arm is usually sore and sometimes my muscles ache. But before I used to get the flu shots every year, I used to get a nasty winter cold/upper respiratory infection. Since getting the shots -- haven't had a problem. We all get the shots, anyone who spends any amount of time around our son.

BTW, my mom got her flu shot this year and got the flu a few days later. She's never ever had a problem before. She figures that the day she was at the clinic, the waiting room was full and she caught it while waiting for her shot. Where my folks live was probably hit the hardest this year with influenze -- thousands of cases. Liza
