Flu Mist Clinic at my daughter's school

Hi Everyone... Quick question. I have two daughters with CF (16 and 12)... both Double Delta F508 but both very healthy, relatively speaking of course. I am ashamed to admit it but they have not received their flu shots yet (it has been a rough year with a couple of deaths in the family recently and we just haven't managed to get the shots)...

Anyhow, I just found out that the schools in our town are holding flu mist clinics at my daughter's schools starting tomorrow and going thru all of next week. I'm freaking out a little because of the girls not having their shots and being around all those people who are getting the flu mist...

If I could get the girl's flu shots tonight, do you think they would be at less risk or does it even matter if they have had their flu shots? I will try to tackle this question. First off, I would ask either your daughter's pediatrician or CF doc what their opinion is.

I would get the girls their flu shots BUT that will not be enough time for any immunity to kick in. I would think it takes at least 7-10 days before immunity starts to occur with the flu shot and that would not be full immunity.

If it makes you feel any better; the year the swine flu was going around all that was available in our area for non high risk patients was the mist. My son and husband both got the flu mist and my daughter and I were able to get the shot. I think (if I remember correctly) alot of kids in her school did get the mist. My daughter had no adverse effects from my son and husband getting the mist. It was not the ideal choice but it was the only one we had at that time.

I am guessing as long as your daughters do not get the flu mist vaccine themselves and do not go to the actual flu mist clinic where they are administering the flu mist vaccine; the risk of them picking up the flu from the mist shedding is relatively low. I am not sure how long the vaccine is shed, maybe a few days but my guess is the risk is low....

That being said; I would ask your pediatrician their thoughts; maybe they have insight?

Thank you very much! That does make me feel better to hear someone else say that the risk is relatively low. I am getting the girl's shots tonight. And I have left a message for the girl's dr office to call me back. I was ashamed to call because I know they are going to jump on me for not having gotten their flu shots already...
Thanks again for your help!
While I would not normally suggest such an act, I would honestly keep the girls home tomorrow and talk to the school administration about this 'stunt' of over-reaching.

FluMist is very specifically contraindicated for anyone that might be exposed to compromised patients. This includes CF as well as things such as cancer. I can't believe they would blindly use it on a whole school w/o true informed consent. You know full well there are grandparents, cousins, siblings that can possibly be at risk.

That said per the manufacturer's clinical studies they were able to isolate live virus from 80% of vaccinated patients, with a mean duration of 7.6 +/- 3.4 days.

Based upon this, it is POSSIBLE to contract it up to probably 1-1.5 weeks after the FluMist is given.

There is no way to determine the exact risk to your kids; but their study implies it is <1% for 1 vaccinated child, and one non-vaccinated child in a daycare setting. However, a 200:2 ratio would naturally increase those odds.

I would recommend you get your kids the flu shot and send them to school as usual even with the mist clinic going on. The live virus in flu mist is more of a problem for people with respiratory conditions because you are introducing a live virus into the respiratory tract. Since people with CF are not immunocompromised like cancer patients on chemo it is safe to be around those who have had flu mist.

Your kids are old enough to wash hands and do all the usual good health habits. You can pick worse things up at Walmart.

I guess my reasoning is; even if you keep them out one day, the day of the flu mist clinic, what's to say they won't pick up the flu within the next several days going to school before their immunity kicks in? When the swine flu was going around a couple years ago, it hit our school before the vaccine was available. Lots of kids were getting the flu; I was able to get my daughter the flu shot...but there were kids coming down with the swine flu that same week. I felt soooo stressed out that week of school. One mother with a child with asthma chose to keep her child home from school until the flu shot was given to her child and then kept them home for 2 weeks after for safety.

I did not choose to keep my daughter home. She was well at the time; and we rolled the dice. She did not get the flu but I was VERY nervous. It's the way it is on public school.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond to me! I really appreciate your thoughts!
I called the school board yesterday to clarify exactly when and where the clinics were going to take place and to express my concerns. I also talked to my girls and explained the situation to them... that there is a slight risk and, though it's unlikely they would get sick, if they knew for sure that someone had had the flu mist, don't be hugging on them and that type of thing.
The way the school is doing the clinic is they are going to a different school each day between 3:00 and 5:00 and parents can bring their kids in to get the flu mist. Other family members can get it as well. So they will only be at my girl's actual schools once. That made me feel better. Thou I'm still surprised that they are even doing this at the schools...
I also had a bit of a "DUH" moment at 3:00 this morning when I couldn't sleep... it suddenly dawned on me that there is a way bigger risk of the girls catching the flu from a couple of kids at school having the flu than from several having had the flu mist... they normally get their flu shots at their CF clinic but we've had to cancel the last two we scheduled due to family emergencies for which we had to go out of state. Our CF clinic is six hours away from home so we can't just run in on a moment's notice... of course we could have simply gone to Walgreens but honestly it never really occurred to me until this came up....
Again, thanks so much for all your thoughts and opinions. Sometimes I just need to hear what other people think to make me feel better!
