flu mist

I'm glad you asked this question because I came on here just to look this up. I hadn't even thought about the flu mist because last year our son was under 2 so he just got the shot. We were just at the Pediatrician's for his 2 year Kid Med and they were going to give him a flu shot. They came in with the mist and paper for me to sign for him to have it. They asked if he had asthma and I got concerned...I said no but he has Cystic Fibrosis, it's a lung disease and she told me she didn't KNOW if he could have it that she would ask another nurse! I told her if she didn't know then he wasn't getting it. This wasn't his Pediatrician but the Kid Med side of the office and they always seem like they don't know what their doing, I hate when he has to go there! Anyways...I'll do the shot, ty for the information and man I'm glad I didn't sign that paper and give it to him. It baffles me how dumb some nurses and doctors are....shouldn't they know who can and can't take something they are giving out!?!?

Hey Tammy,
Before accepting the mist, you have to fill out a form (at least I think it's more than just my hospital's form) and your child has to "pass." He wouldn't have passed due to a line on the form that talks about respiratory issues. Weird that a nurse administering the mist didn't know that though.

Jeana is right; it's not just a form for her hospital. The mist is specifically contraindicated for anyone with respiratory illness, asthma, wheezing- they ask about that as they skim down the form along with the other typical questions (i.e. 'have you ever had adverse reactions to vax before, are you allergic to eggs, ever had Guillain-Barré, etc) and both you and the person giving the vax have to sign it after answering all the questions. Whenever any of the kids have had the mist here (Emily had it several times before she was dx'ed with cf, and the boys have had it several times too) we've had to sign off on it.

My doctor wrote a letter to the army doctors telling them that my husband and roomate have to have the shot and can not have the mist due to my health. Nick did get the mist when it first came out and I got sick for about 2 weeks after he got it. I would say not to let family members get it, from personal experience and from my doctors advice.
