My parents never got the flu shot when I was growing up, though I got one every year. I guess I was just lucky. I only got the flu maybe 1-2 times in the 24 years I lived with them! I don't think any of my relatives got the shot. I think it carries the stigma that you only need it if you're young or old or immunocompromised, and NOT for people who are generally healthy. I think this is bogus cause those people contact us people. lol Either way, I guess I can only do MY part in being protected, and I support getting a flu shot every year (unless you're allergic) 100%. jmo though.

My company offers the flu shot at a low rate at a clinic at work. (And almost everyone there is young and healthy) because they don't want to loose us to sick days. I am greatful. Before that it was almost impossible to avoid with every one coming into work sick and sneezing in my face at meetings and such.

I am the only one that gets one out of everyone I know. My parents don't get them - the few times my mom has gotten them she ended up sick with walking pnuemonia and same with my dad - he ended up getting bronchitus or something.

As for everyone else I think like someone mentioned they tend to think they are for the old and immunosuppressed or people with respiratory problems...

To add to that though .. my primary care doc gives them out to people on priority basis .. elderly and asthmatics and then once all of those people are taken care of everyone else can get them. I called once to get mine .. thinking asthma patients get them I will have no problem ... it took me 2 days to convince the receptionist that Cystic Fibrosis was more serious than asthma .. in a sense that I could necesitate getting a flu shot. Then at that I had to leave a message for the doc to call me back, so she could tell the receptionist to set me up to get the shot lol.

I have always gotten a flu shot and my parents normally do to but the last year or so there has been a shortage in flu shots and only I think older people, young babies, docs, nurses, and people with disseases like CF etc. could get a Flu shot around my neck of the woods. Hope it is not like that this year But I know a few people that square that when they get a flu shot they will get sick so everyones body is different.

Another thing about being high priority for the flu shot. There was opne flu season when there was a shortage and when my husband was too ill to get the flu shot at the beginning of the season. Those years they identified me and anyone who caref for him (like PCAs) as high priority and we were given the shot - just like doctors and nurses.
