Flu shots at clinic

Why does it seem that every year that my sons CF Clinic is always the last to get the flu vaccine in? I see them advertised all over the place. The grocery stores, Walmarts, Pharmacies and I just got an automated call from the Health Dept.

You would think that a pulmonary clinic would be one of the first to get the vaccines.

Just venting.

Our local clinic always gets the vaccine in early; however, they make sure their employees and "high risk" patients get vaccinated first. Don't get me started. I'm still very annoyed about last year's vaccine fiasco.

I called a couple weeks ago and was told they didn't have the vaccine in, but found out they were holding vaccine clinics for adults this week and a friend of mine's child got vaccinated at a different clinic. So they once again were less than truthful. Sigh..

Our ped still doesn't have the injectable vaccine- they've been scheduled to get it 'any day' for 3 weeks now, and yet I walked into WalMart on Saturday and found them doing a flu shot clinic in front of their pharmacy... and the Walgreens 10min from my house is advertising 'flu shots every day.' Not exactly a shortage of the vaccine! My dh gets one through his employer the 1st week of Oct. Our clinic told us back in early August at Emily's last appt. that they were scheduled to get theirs the 2nd week of October- that if her ped got it sooner to get it there, but if not, she could get it at her next clinic the following week. So we'll see if they get theirs when they are supposed to, although I truly hope she is able to get it sooner than that.

If her ped doesn't have it soon I will just take her to Walgreens and pay the $25 for it. Flu is going around earlier and earlier and she wound up with an awful 2ndary bronchitis following h1n1 last year. She was vaccinated last year- but got sick 4 days later (so likely exposed before getting the shot.)

Despite being covered by insurance, I have just paid out of pocket in the past just for piece of mind for myself and am willing to do the same if need be. I seem to recall just turning the receipt in from public health a few years ago to my insurance and they covered it despite "going out of network".

Here is another thing that I have noticed and been told by the nurse at the boys peds office. The boys I have custody of have the medical card. I was told that they did indeed have the flu vaccination in but it was for private pay ins. only And that their shipment for the medical card patients has not come in yet. That was a few years ago I was told this. Boy I was not very happy. What makes the difference what type of insurance you have. If you are at a high risk you should receive the vaccine first no matter who is paying for it. I guess I wasn't aware that they had different shipments coming in as to how you are paying. Oh also if I wanted to pay out of pocket I could have gotten one of the vaccines that they already had in.

It is amazing though how they distribute the flu vaccines and then a few months after the hype they have tons left over and advertise like crazy. And how do the pharmacy's, emplowers and everyone else seem to get them before the hospitals and doctors offices?

Oh my goodness- that is SO unethical!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">

I have no idea how these other places can get it first- our ped has the mist, but nothing to provide the high-risk kids who need the shot. And yet the pharmacies, etc always have the shot, which is exactly what the hospitals and dr's offices NEED for those kids and take forever to get in stock. It's all about ease of payment I am sure... they generally don't accept Medicaid/state plans, and only a few reg insurance plans. Everyone gets their money so it's an easy sale for the vax companies to make.
