Flu Shots

Hi,

I read in another thread where someone was asking a question about family needing flu shots as well as the person with CF. Austin has been getting a flu shot every year for 13 years and none of the doctors ever told me that my daughter and I also needed to get one. He was given a flu shot in August. I understand that if I get sick or his sister does, that he could get sick also, but I guess I had just thought I would cross that bridge if I ever came to it.

When I was working, I was a Clinical Medical Assistant and I got a flu shot every year because I was being exposed on a daily basis. When I got meningitis, I was hospitalized and when I came home, we had Austin go stay with my mom until the coast was clear. I'm wondering if I should ask far more questions than I already am when I take him to clinic. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> There is obviously so much more I need to learn. I've trusted these doctors for 13 years and I'm starting to get nervous.

Cute kids! Yes, everyone in your house should get a flu shot. My boyfriend brought the flu home last year and despite my shot I still got it. If he had his shot I might not have gotten it. Also where do you live? If you're in the US August is much too early to get vaccinated. Our flu season is from mid-late fall to spring and the shot is only good for about 3 or 4 months. If you aren't in the US just ignore that, your flu season is probably different. The point is living with a high risk person is enough to get yourself a shot even if there is a shortage like last year. My parents were still able to get them just because my brother (who also has CF) is still at home.

I'm very surprised your doctors never mentioned this to you. I would find out why.

Now that I look back on his records, he was in the ER with the throat problems the end of August and when he went back for a checkup 2 weeks later, that?s when he got the flu shot. I agree with you, it might have been too soon. I live in Redding, California. It was our primary physician that gave him the flu shot. When he had his last clinic visit down in Sacramento on October 18th, we told them when he had his flu shot and they didn?t even blink, just said ok and on to the next subject.

oh yes, flu shots are very important for the whole family. I got one, and even my baby girl got one, which she's happy she doesn't have to do this year. I still do, because I work at a school. Just make everyone get shot up, we asked (since you can't force) Both sides of our family to please consider getting a flu shot, and several of our close friends did too. Hyper protective it might have been, but better save than sorry.

My children 's Doctor's have always told us that all of our children need Flu shots, that they were considered high risk (they all three have Asthma). This was before they were dx with CF or a carrier to CF, they very much stressed for us more than in the past to get their Flu shots, they juggled around their schedulesd to get us in as soon as possible! I also have a friend and her son has an extremely rare lung disease and their whole Family are made to get Flu shots ( Mom, Dad, Sister, Grandparents and even suggested where he goes to Day Care >> since it is a small Family Day Care>> to ask if the other children receive shots ). My kids are 4 1/2, 6 1/2, and 8 1/2 and they have been getting Fu shots since thye were at least one? I don't know if this helps are not, but I was on another thread and was asking questions as well?

Our whole family gets flu shots to protect especiallly the kids with CF. I wait until the first week of November several years ago my son ended up sick two years in a row in March. So it covers us londer
