Flying w the vest

I usually take a letter from my dr. with all meds/equipment listed.

<br /> when going through security, it seems the nebulizer compressor is more of a problem. They want you to take the neb compressor out of the carry case..

<br /> I always take any med equipment onboard with me. I usually have extra meds/nebs in my clothing carry on so that is considered a med bag as well <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> Hope they dont give you a hard time.

The vest and neb always has to be taken out of the bag when they inspect it. I usually leave it in and let them take it out, but it would save a little time if you did it instead.
I have never passed through the line without them swabbing/testing the vest. The neb has been less of a hassle for me. They are always very careful with both machines, seeing that is it obviously medical equipment.
Internationally, I'm often asked questions about it-what is it for, how do you use it? Thats their job. I always bring a letter with me from the doc just in case. The only time I had to pull it out and use it was in Egypt.
I've also never had a problem with getting it to fit in the overhead, or there not being enough room bc of a packed flight. Just mention it to an attendant, and your medical equipment gets priority. They will move someone else's bag to make a spot for you if they have to.
Also, I've never had a problem with my liquid medications. I always carry them on-Never ever check them. Again-its medically neccessary for them to stay with you. They can't force you to check them. I also be sure to keep each one separately sealed in a ziploc with the prescription label so they can see its legit. Again, never had a problem with it.

I just went on a trip a few days ago and it was also my first time bringing my vest. I was really nervous about the whole thing, especially with the new body scanners which I think my g-tube would show up on. Anyway the vest part was fine. We had no problem with security in Denver and didn't even need to take it out of the bag (its the new small vest with the bag with wheels and pockets on each side) We did end up taking it out and showing the security guys the vest thought but only because they had never seen it before and were just curious about it. They did tell us that the bag is perfect for screening since everything is separate. In Mexico we also had no problems. The airport in Huston did make us take it out of the bag and look at it but it was fine. As for carrying it on the plane it wasn't a problem for me. It fits in the overhead bin just fine, and as long as you are on relatively early there should be space. I would guess that you could talk to the flight attendants and tell them that it is fragile medical equipment and cannot be checked if there is not space. I have heard that there is also a special compartment on most planes for medical equipment and you can call ahead to reserve this space if your air line has it. I also have a letter from my doctor explaining everything I am bringing and why I need it just in case but so far I have not had to use it.

Does anyone fly with the older, huge, really heavy vest? I can't imagine being able to lift that into an overhead bin or carrying it around the airport - it's so freaking heavy!

Hey Kristen!

I don't know about flying a the big vest, but you might want to check with your respiratory therapist at you clinic about applying for the vest upgrade. They lowered the price if you are upgrading to the smaller, more portable vest and it isn't too expensive anymore(so insurance isn't rejecting it as much as they used to). They also have financial assistance you can qualify for. I traded mine probably about 9 months ago and it has been great! I can actually move rooms that I do treatments in pretty easy now.

I flew with the large, old vest for years. Finally got an upgrade thank goodness. But it didn't fit in the overhead so I had to ask to store it in a closet. Unforunately a lot of the planes no longer have closets. However, they do have storage for wheel chairs and if that is not being used they let me store the vest there.
Some airlines are better than others.
Even with the new "portable" vest it can be difficult. The airlines will not help you get it in to the overhead. While trying to lift it in myself it slid out of my hands and hit a lady that was seated. She was fine, but it really scared me. I have trouble getting it in the overhead by myself. Usually look for a nice gentleman to help me just to be safe.

Ugh I never flew with the old big one. (The Transformer, I used to call it)
It stunk bc I always had to travel with someone who was willing to clap me.
Now I bring the new one on every trip-unless its just an overnight thing, then DH does
manual or I do acapella.

I have not had to fly with my vest yet, but will seriously consider sending it FedEx to my destination if I need to transport it in the future. Then I don't have to worry about lugging it around airports, going thru security, etc. The downside is that I would have to use my Acapella for a couple of days while vest is in transit, but if it saves some hassle, then it would be worth it, IMO.
