I had a hydrogen breath test to determine if I had bacterial overgrowth a few months back. The reason for the test was abdominal bloating and gas. A caution offered by another contributor noting that hyper acidity and hypo acidity in the stomach and gut can feel the same, suggested the test. Before rushing out to have the relatively easy test, the vast majority of people don't have bacterial overgrowth but CFers seem to have issues with anything involving the components in salt and stomach acid is made in part by cells that excrete or pump chlorine ions.
Bacterial overgrowth can be an issue with regards to foul gas. The test itself alerted me to a personal source of gas, sugar free gum! The test is done while fasting and the "food" for bacteria alone is an artificial sweetener like mannitol. Those sugar free sweets may freshen your breath but then who would notice in a blue cloud of unnatural gas!
I don't have bacterial overgrowth but I am on the monster of proton pump inhibitors and the possibility of the other extreme was very real. Without overgrowth as a source of gas, my GI doctor gave me a printout of low FODMAP or Fermentable Oligo-Di-Monosaccarrides and Polyols or foods that contain indigestible sugars or sugar-alcohols The ever present fructose debate (sugar is sugar) and (marketing is shoe polish) is understood better when we realize that humans don't make the enzyme that normally digests fructose. Bacteria and other probiotic yeasts, molds and such digest fructose through fermentation, hence gas. People do digest fructose but not through a single enzyme like fructase. We break it down with two different enzymes and the results are less than ideal. The conversion isn't complete and our cells end up utilizing it anyway as fuel. I haven't read anything to support this but I believe this incomplete digestion contributes to type 2 diabetes. The fact that this inexpensive sugar is tempting us to load up foods with it in order to entice sales, may be more pernicious still. All fruits with pit seeds like dates and cherries make fructose as its sugar. Pulp fruits like apples are loaded with fructose. I don't suggest giving up apples but moderation is key. Many plant foods are high FODMAPs, legumes or beans and other high protein plant products like avacados and garbanzo beans or chick peas plus the vegetable protein, gluten in some grains, make the list seem impossible. By dropping wheat, I had a significant improvement. I'll eat pizza and could care less because it doesn't destroy the balance in moderation.
Rather than listing all high/low FODMAP foods I suggest you do a search or ask your doctor. You do NOT need a purchased diet or cookbook. The list is straightforward and easily followed. All of the foods, excepting hot dogs, that others have volunteered as gas producers, are FODMAPs.
Pork or fats rendered from the parts of animals used for sausages and hot dogs divide us genetically. Some people can digest these fats and others are smart to never touch them. Some of us digest these huge fat molecules but the rest of us, the foodstuff begins to putrify in the gut. Oh! The agony of never getting to enjoy a tube steak.
CF isn't required for death fart disease. I have a friend who was also employee number two that could foul the air in a 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility. The first three years we worked together in the basement of our house and I still can't smell certain things. The funny part of this story was a career change after fifteen years of loyalty to the company he helped start. The farts stopped the day he started his new job! We occasionally get together and the reason behind the sudden change escapes everybody to this day. While working together, I built a special office chair pillow for him and placed HEPA/activated charcoal air purifiers in the four closest offices just to make sure other people didn't quit. The only differences between the two jobs were the job itself and the commute. The work employed the same skill sets and the engineering process was similar.
His new career was an hour commute on a typically fast but busy highway compared to a 25 minute bicycle commute to our facility and that was the only factor after lots of elimination. As upside down as the logic, I am convinced that the hour before and after work unplugged from the intrusions and hubbub of the family getting out the door and mentally closing files, programs and conversations in the hour going home.
Dyspepsia or indigestion is what normal people get. The connection between our emotional state and the ability to clear a room can become a self fulfilling prophecy. Foods that cause death farts can be causing some serious pain along the path of relief. Generally speaking, the message is to either take the appropriate enzyme, not just Creon or such, or stop consuming the offending, offensive food.
