FWIW:
My first child is the result of a scenario somewhat like you describe: not on the pill and using other, less reliable methods. I found out when I ended up hospitalized after being unable to keep down any food for three days. I was 10 weeks along and I had no clue whatsoever. I felt awesome the first month of both of my pregnancies and both times I started a fitness program because I had so much energy. Then, at week four, I began going down hill. I think that's when I began vomiting regularly. Like you, a late period was not an indicator of anything for me because I could go for several months without a period. With my second (planned) pregnancy, we knew a lot quicker. I was sick like I had the flu and my then husband came home from the field and within the first day said to me (nicely and with good humor) "You're pregnant. You're a total bitch." So I went and got a pregnancy test. I had also said to someone else a few days before that "Oh, god, I hope I'm pregnant because this is how dog sick I was with my first pregnancy and if I'm not pregnant I really won't want to keep trying for a baby now that I remember how awful it was." But with my first pregnancy, I had no idea at all.
You could try doubling up on preventive measures, like condom with spermicide foam. But that could also quickly get expensive. Or you could go looking for some cheaper means to get the pill. If it were me, in addition to looking for Planned Parenthood and the like, I might price them at online pharmacies that don't require a prescription and see how affordable that is.
Good luck with this.
