for anyone on bi-pap

This past admission, my doctor thought it would be a good idea to start me on bi-pap at night. I normally sleep with oxygen and my CO2 levels were getting too high. Anyway- there is no doubt that I sleep much better with bi-pap than without, and I don't have any CO2 headaches in the morning when I wake up; I have so much more energy during the day, too. The only problem I have with this is that when I wake up and take off the mask and try to breathe on my own, it feels too hard! That feeling stays with me all day, like I can't breathe well enough on my own. Lung function wise, I am the highest I have been in a long time, but after a night on bi-pap I feel out of breath all day.

It almost feels like my body gets used to having something else do most of the breathing work and when I take off the bi-pap it doesn't want to go back to doing the whole job on its own! I have actually been looking forward to putting it back on at night, just because it relieves that (extremely uncomfortable) feeling of strain.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something that will go away, or that I will get used to? I hate feeling like I can never catch my breath- especially when I know that my pfts are up right now and I should be feeling good! I tried increasing my O2 to 3L right when I take the mask off and while I get ready for my classes, but that didn't help at all and I still went through the whole day struggling for air.

I am going to bring this up when I see my doctor again on Thursday, I am just hoping for a little input from anyone else who has been there <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks!

I'm so sorry to hear about that Julie...I experienced that in my last hospital stay. I was the sickest that I've ever been and the bi-pap was the only thing that would keep my SATs above 90 during the day. They would have me go on 4 hours on 4 hours off. Eventually it was just nights and I remembered looking forward to putting it back on at night for the same reasons. I just figured it was because my overall lung health. As my lungs got better, that sensation went away. I eventually moved to o2 during the day and now I'm home and only on o2 at night.

Can you maybe jump on it in between classes and concentrate on some really deep breaths? I wish I could be more of a help. Definitely talk to your doc about it.

do you know what your sats are running during the day when you are off of O2? Do you have a pulse ox at home? I am just wondering if you are desating during the day. I have never been on bi-pap; but, I am on O2 at night...1L. I have noticed that if I ever put the O2 up at night for any reason that it is kind of difficult the next day. Like my body got use to something doing the work for it. I know that sounds crazy; but, that is how I felt. I do fine now on 1L at night.

I can't believe you are posting this.. This is exactly what I am experiencing right now... I just started Bi pap at night for a bunch of different reason, some I am not even clear on...

But I find the same thing, I come off the Bi Pap I feel good for a few hours and I am fine as long as I don't do anything, but today I went back to work and my chest is just killing me from what I notice I am "heaving" to take a deep breath... and on exertion..

today I came home from work and put the bi pap on and it makes me feel so much better.. I know it is taking the work load for me but I want to know why I can't carry my own work load.. and also why all of a sudden I am waiting to put it on when I never used it before....

I am glad to know I am not alone
