I don't know if any of this will apply to anyone else or not, but it has been interesting (gah!):
Okay, here's the scoop-
I started the Nuvaring on Tuesday of last week. Took a Diflucan on Wednesday (crud, I forgot the link, but Diflucan can cause hypoglycemia apparently, but also:
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/ethinyl-estradiol_d00229_diflucan_d00071.html">drugs.com, interactions</a>
fluconazole and ethinyl estradiol (Moderate Drug-Drug)
MONITOR: <b>Azole antifungal agents may increase the plasma concentrations of estrogens and progestins. </b> ).
By Saturday afternoon, my blood sugar was pretty running high (240-250), despite taking my Prandin in increased dosages. Note: afternoons are my worst time for lows, not highs.
This morning (Sunday) it was up to 350! after breakfast, so I popped a couple of extra Prandin, did some research, and decided to take out the Nuvaring, say my prayers! and waited to see what happened (also started making mental notes of afterhours clinics where I might be able to get a shot of insulin!).
About 3 hours later, (which, btw, is the maximum you can leave the Nuvaring out without affecting the effectiveness of it, and after one more .5 Prandin, 30 mins. before this next bs check), my blood sugar was down to 104. And a few minutes ago (2 1/2 hours after eating a small lunch of leftover roast and carrots and potatoes), I had to have something for low blood sugar, as usual.
Just my experience, but I thought if it helps anybody...and, I decided to take out the Nuvaring based on info from Googling, so - Yay for being an E-patient <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .
What I found:
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ahealthyme.com/topic/nuvaring">Healthy me/nuva ring article</a>
According to the manufacturer, <b>the ring delivers less estrogen than the patch and many oral contraceptive pills</b>. The ring does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
"The hormones in the pill and ring can increase blood pressure, causing hypertension in some women. They can also raise LDL ("bad" cholesterol) and triglyceride levels, and women with high lipid (blood fat) counts or a family history of premature heart disease should have their levels checked. <b>The hormones can also worsen glucose tolerance</b>, so women with risk factors for diabetes (pre-diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy) should be tested and monitored. <b>Some women with diabetes have dramatic changes in blood glucose levels when they start hormonal contraceptives."</b>
