not to change subject, but what is the pipercillan cf weird connection? i just did 3 weeks of piper for first time and had odd symptoms.

as for the ring, yes i did have my sugars monitored while on it for 3 years. i personally loved the ring. i had so many less hormonal symptoms while on it. another bc, depo pro, made me feel suicidal while with others i have had bad anemia and heavy bleeding, and gi issues.
on the opinion of my ob plus a second opinion (i am a big 2nd opinion patient), the theory behind the benefits of the nuva ring are that it doesn't have to go all the way through the digestive tract as do other forms of bc because it isn't absorbed that way. so you can experience much less gastro symptoms, if you are prone to that. i have a huge gastro/hormone connection. (diahr during period, diahr and unbelievable constap while preg, ect...i don't get period cramps, i get intestinal ones!) oral bc only made that worse.
So for me the ring was an answer to my prayers.
just offering a positive exp with it. if i had had a history of sugar problems of course i'd be more cautious.

Oh my word! Thank you so much for posting. Since going on the ring several years ago, my blood sugars have been sky high. I just thought it was my CFRD getting worse. Maybe the ring is partially to blame.

Since my blood sugars have been so wacky I have been REALLY dehydrated, even to the point of having to be hospitalized to have IV fluids. I also have been spilling protein, which may be caused from higher blood pressure (now I'm on Lisinopril to lower it). Normally my blood pressure is very low. Gosh, who would have ever thought it could be the ring! Darn it. I really liked the convenience!

Has anyone ever investigated the side effects of the patch? I have tried countless pills and I hate them, I have tried the shot (loved it) but it gave me ostiopenia. Help?!

Hi Christian-
When I first went on Pippercillin (sp?), I experienced "growing pains" in my legs. My doc told me wasn't connected. Ok, fine. I then began experiencing 105 fevers after every dose. Doc said there is no evidence in literature that pip causes high fevers. I asked about cfers...he said no, he has no cfers that have this reaction.
He wrote it off as exacerbation. I'm like, dude, I am no doc, but the only time I feel like this is when I am this antibiotic. He still wouldn't budge.

Then one year later he called me and said he had another cfer with the same high fevers and it must be the drug and I probably shouldn't take it anymore...ya think?

Just recently I read that in the drug literature, it has been updated that pippercillin can cause high fevers specifically in the cf population. No explanation other than that given.
That being said Christian, these drugs while helpful can cause permanent problems. It is up to us to tell our docs when side effects are too severe.

Interesting, about the ring. I have read up on it and many studies show it does not increase glucose intolerance more than other contraceptive methods in diabetic population. My quess is, there is a component to it that affects cfrd in a different way. I read that it does increase the hormones associated with thyroid production...wondering if that could make a difference?

All I know is that I am sending this link to my gyno.... She is a researcher at UT Southwestern and this is just the kind of thing she likes

How is the baby?

I didn't know that either about the Pippercillin (but forgot to ask- been a little distracted - thanks)!

After the blood sugar lows yesterday evening, it went high again and stuck for a couple of hours, then went back down in time for my nighttime snack and pills, then this morning, my bs was 90; at 1 hour after eating it was 230-240 (also discovered that my meter is off, and got a new meter-it was fine yesterday- arrgghhh!), and then I went and excercised, and checked it 3 hours later....227.

Do you know if they specified which Diabetic Population? Type 1 or Type 2?

I tried it for the similar reasons- we thought (my Gyn and my GI) that it would be easier on my liver, since it wasn't dumped on my system in one big bang, but slowly and more "naturally".

I am bummed, I admit . I thought about trying it again after I get on insulin (I have a call in to the Endo's nurse right now- I hope they call me back today), but I dunno if it would be worth it to see if my system regulated it...*sigh* I'm kinda thinking "not" at this point. Maybe someone will come up with a progestin only version, or even a patch...

Thanks everybody! I'll let you know what my Endo says (the receptionist just called to clarify my info for the nurse to call me back- stupid raspy voice of mine! ).
After the blood sugar lows yesterday evening, it went high again and stuck for a couple of hours, then went back down in time for my nighttime snack and pills, then this morning, my bs was 90; at 1 hour after eating it was 230-240 (also discovered that my meter is off, and got a new meter-it was fine yesterday- arrgghhh!), and then I went and excercised, and checked it 3 hours later....227.
on the opinion of my ob plus a second opinion (i am a big 2nd opinion patient), the theory behind the benefits of the nuva ring are that it doesn't have to go all the way through the digestive tract as do other forms of bc because it isn't absorbed that way. so you can experience much less gastro symptoms, if you are prone to that. i have a huge gastro/hormone connection. (diahr during period, diahr and unbelievable constap while preg, ect...i don't get period cramps, i get intestinal ones!) oral bc only made that worse.

So for me the ring was an answer to my prayers.
just offering a positive exp with it. if i had had a history of sugar problems of course i'd be more cautious.</end quote>

I'll let you know what my Endo says (the receptionist just called to clarify my info for the nurse to call me back- stupid raspy voice of mine! ).
