For those using hypertonic saline

Do you know of your insurance covered it? I had a hard time first finding a pharmacy to make it here (IN) and then they wanted to charge $120 but won't bill insurance - I don't have the time or the money to deal with that every month, so I used the CF services pharmacy and they still charge $111 but do bill insurances. I am hoping my insurance will cover it, but I am afraid since it is so new. I have a private PPO provider from my work and I have Children with Special Health Care needs through the state - so I am praying - anyone else know about this??

My insurance (BCBS HMO) covers the HTS I was prescribed. 3% saline. You are probably looking for 5 or 7%? I am questioning whether I can even tolerate the 3% so maybe you could start there and then move up in strength. I get the 3% in vials that have 15ml in each vial and only use 3 ml and then throw out the rest. I mean really it's salt water??!! I don't feel I'm being wasteful. I had her prescribe it in a larger dose / mo. so my insurance would give me the additional vials needed so that I don't need to reuse them. I find this unsanitary but many don't. Your call. Keep pushing..

My daughter's insuranace company covers it but the copay is more than the saline. My daughter is on 3% and it's $42.00 for a month supply. But it actually doesn't end up being a month b/c like the last poster, she uses 5 ml of a 15 ml tube and then we throw out the rest. She is 4 and has never really coughed after therapy but now since she is on the saline she is coughing up lugies!!!! I have definintly noticed a difference.

My insurance has been covering it since I started nebbing it about 8 years ago. My pharmacy doesn't mix it themselves, they order it from some drug company. I get a 3 month supply of 10% hypertonic saline solution for $8 or $9, and my docs have me dilute it with normal saline down to about 7%. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield
good luck
