Well let me just say I am the perfect example of why you need to flush your port. Not trying to scare anyone but you really do need to flush every 4-6 weeks. I had my port for 8 years and towards the end I had gone thru my denial stage in life. Well that included not flushing my port as I should. It had prob been at least 6 months since I had flushed my port last. Well I went into the hospital for a routine tune up. The put the needle in and pulled back a good blood return. When he flushed it with the saline I felt this intense burning feelnig go over from my port to the center of my chest. I sat up and yelled. I told them it hurt really bad and I couldnt brethe. The next thing I knew I passed out and coded on them. They ended up puting me on a reporator that night jsut b/c they couldnt figure out what caused it. After it was all said and done they could fine nothing that caused it. No blood clots, no air, no signs at all. Later the nurses and I came to the conclusion that it was an infection inside the port. A nurse had a little boy do the same thing on her and it was that the infection was in the port and got pushed straight to the heart. Not trying to scare anyone but Im a great example of why you should flush your port. Needless to say it was a huge wake up call for me and I am back on track now with everything!
