Forgetful flushes

Well let me just say I am the perfect example of why you need to flush your port. Not trying to scare anyone but you really do need to flush every 4-6 weeks. I had my port for 8 years and towards the end I had gone thru my denial stage in life. Well that included not flushing my port as I should. It had prob been at least 6 months since I had flushed my port last. Well I went into the hospital for a routine tune up. The put the needle in and pulled back a good blood return. When he flushed it with the saline I felt this intense burning feelnig go over from my port to the center of my chest. I sat up and yelled. I told them it hurt really bad and I couldnt brethe. The next thing I knew I passed out and coded on them. They ended up puting me on a reporator that night jsut b/c they couldnt figure out what caused it. After it was all said and done they could fine nothing that caused it. No blood clots, no air, no signs at all. Later the nurses and I came to the conclusion that it was an infection inside the port. A nurse had a little boy do the same thing on her and it was that the infection was in the port and got pushed straight to the heart. Not trying to scare anyone but Im a great example of why you should flush your port. Needless to say it was a huge wake up call for me and I am back on track now with everything!

Thank you to everyone who replied <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

It's good to know that I didn't have to panic too much.

But I will definitely stick to once a month from now on!!!

LightNlife - thanks for the info, you have a very informative blog there. I didn't know that skin can cause a blockage. I will remember that the next time before they bruise her by trying to push a blocked needle.
(though her blockage scares usually happen when they use the wrong needle and don't put it in right)
Kj's port doesn't like gripper needles <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

Alisha - you story is very scary, I'm glad you came out of it ok!! That is definitely a story that I will remember!!

May all of those with ports remember there flushes lol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Mum2kj,

I am in the process of cleaning out my garage from moving into our new house a few months back and all the boxes of papers and books are being put up on shelves and organized finally. So the stack of information they gave me on Garrans port whould be in that wealth of paperwork...lol...It will be found.

Talk to you you soon, and best wishes with everything!

By the way I heard that it is just amazing in Australia. and a beautiful place to live.
