Fortaz

I saw on another discussion that Fortaz can be used to treat b cepacia.
I've been on IV Fortaz a couple of times and I don't think I have b cepacia. Has anyone else used Fortaz that does NOT have cepacia? I guess I'm asking if it can be used to treat other infections as well.
I'm about half paranoid now that I may have cepacia and not know it simply because my Dr has used Fortaz.
Thank you for any replies.

I would hope that your doctor would tell you if you cultured c-cepacia....are they not honest with you??? Maybe you should consult your doc...just a thought. Hope you don't have it!

I have been on Fortaz before, I believe it can treat many different infections such as Staph and what not. I would think that if you cultured b. cepacia they would inform you, especially since that is such a tough bug.

fortaz is a newer medicine called a cephalosporin(third generation) and kills lots of different things. Mostly is used to target gram negative bacteria but can used used for some gram positive. Some of the stuff it kills other than B Cepacia is pseudomonas, E coli and Salmonella. Please keep in mind that your doc is probably is using it to treat a strain of pseudomonas and is a very commom thing.

Whew! Thank you for the responses. I feel a lot better now. I do have pseudomonas (don't we all), so that's probably what they were treating me for. I also have a copy of my latest sputum culture & it doesn't mention b cepacia anyplace. A couple of cultures ago, aspergillius showed up, so that could have been the reason for the Fortaz too.

Newer medicine? I guess, compared to, say, Penicillin, but I remember being treated with it in the 1980s. I've been given Ceftazidime (that's Fortaz and other brand names) lots, but mostly before I acquired the cepacia. I got it recently, and it didn't do a damn.

Aspergillus isn't treated with anti-biotics, but rather anti-fungals. So Fortaz won't help with that one. Hope the fortaz works on your Pseudomonas though.

Fortaz is used to cure other infections besides CF.

Doctors prescibe Fortaz to many cancer patients ( specifically those with lung cancer )
