I tried Pamidronate once. It's probably the same a Aredia since it is also taken through IV every 3 months for 2 hours. I had a terrible reaction to it. I developed a high temp and threw up about 30 times the night after taking it. My bones and muscles were very sore & painful esp. my legs. My whole body swelled up about 20lbs. It lasted 2-3 weeks. My CF clinic has stopped using it because of bad side effects. I'm now taking Fosamax, but don't know if it is working yet.

Hey tara. I have taken Forteo. I could not handle the pills. I did Forteo for 2 yrs. Yes it is a daily injection and you must be dedicated to it. One good thing about it is that you do not have to sit up with it. You can go to bed right after taking it, which is what I did. I hate needles, so I used Emla cream. With an ink pen, I would circle where I planned on doing the injection and placed the Emla cream on top of that and covered it with a tegaderm while I did my CPT. When that finished, I would clean off the cream, used an alcohol pad to sterilize the place, and injected the pre-calculated amount. It would sting just a little, but not bad. I could sleep through any side-effects, like bone pain. I dont remember getting any reflux issues with it either. I got great results with Forteo. I went from bad osteoporosis, to almost in the normal range. I cant remember my numbers right this moment but there was a huge difference. I had to get pre-approved from the Ins Co. They told me in order to keep from loosing what Forteo built up, I would need to take something else.

So that brings us to Reclast. I will be starting that on March 14th. I can use my port for the infusion. It is a 15 min infusion that is done only once a year. It is expensive so you have to get pre-approved with Ins. I'm not sure about the side effects, other than what the paper says...bone pain, flu like syptoms, etc. After I get my first dose, I will have to let you know how it was. You do have to take Calcium suppliments one week before and two weeks after the injection, which isnt bad. It's by pill. And drink a lot of water after the infusion for a few days. My CF Dr approved of doing the Reclast and Forteo.

If you have any questions, PM me, I will try to answer the best that I can <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. I hope I was able to help you.

Aredia is Pamidronate yes?

Either way I did Pamidronate for 12 months, like pepperkitty already said it is infused over 2 hours ever 3 months, I found I got chronic bone pain, like the infusion itself was literally coating my bones like a filler...

After 12 months 4 lots of infusion I had a repeated bone scar which showed my bone density was almost normal, which kinda made it worth the pain...

The bone pain would last for a full week, were I was almost crippled and found it difficult to walk etc...

Admittedly by the last injection the pain wasn't that bad, and I think it was due to my bones didn't need as much filler...

You guys are scaring me with all this bone pain. Thank you for being so honest. Being crippled for a week? Guess I better line up someone to take care of the twins with me...just incase! Yikes!

Thank you all for the information. Danyell, please PM me or respond to this thread after your infusion of Reclast. I'm very curious about your experience. I don't know what my doctor will suggest as far as treatment goes, but I almost want to go the IV route because Forteo is such a commitment. But then I'm worried that because of my bone loss already (not sure of the numbers, but it's bad) maybe the IV route would render me incapacitated from pain for some time.
