Hi. I am an adult who is on hi-flow 02 24/7 and always sick w/ a lung infection. I am having friends come in this weekend. One friend had a cold full-blown last week but for right now "it is just hanging on" (i.e., she feels better but still coughing a bit & sniffles)...

She is from out of town and we planned this get-together awhile ago...and re-scheduling is a last available option.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO??

For now, my plan is to keep my distance and both of us wash hands FREQUENTLY.

OTHER IDEAS, EXPERIENCES, ETC??

The life of a CF'r is not easy..... I NEVER go around anyone who is sick if I can help it. I have had plans like yours and we cancelled or that person stayed in a hotel. Me personally I just DO NOT take the chance cause it is just not worth it for me to get sick. Sorry you are in such a tough spot.Anther idea you can do if there is just no way around that person staying with you is have that person wear a mask and you wear a mask too. Granted this is hard to do 24 hrs a day all weekend long. Also spray a ton of lysol, spray everything that person touches. Never put your hands to your face (although if you have a mask on that should be easy) and finally have that person wash their hands constantly and they should never touch their face too.

Good luck with your decision

If she had the cold last week she's most probably past the contagious point. The worst time to be around someone with a virus is the day before they are sick, and the first 3 days of their virus.
I've been in this position many many times. Usually I reschedule. But there's times where you just can't. If I were you, I'd establish a no kissing, no hugging ANYONE rule-that goes for spouses, kids, everyone. Everyone use Purell frequently, and sit far apart from each other.
If you are very worried-as I would be too-maybe it would be a wise idea to wear a mask.

I would reschedule. You hate to do that after the planning and looking forward to it, but if you're like me, her cold could mean weeks of infection and IV's for you.

i wouldnt risk it! there is a nasty cold virus going around. my daughter caught it and it turned into croup and upper respiratory infection and was very sick for almost 2 weeks. i would hope your friend would understand that this is a bad time of year and maybe could reschedule. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My experience when I had a cold and would hang out with CF friend it would end up taking him out of the equation for much longer than if we just avoided each other until my cold went away. If I had a flu virus or UR infection we would stay away from each other much longer than with a cold. For me it meant a few days out of school. For him, a few days in the hospital. If I were your friend I would understand the possible risks to your health and reschedule the trip for at least a few weeks later. Viruses are actually a bit stronger the last few days of a cold/flu. What happens is that youre body has built up defenses against the virus and the virus itself is making a last ditch effort to strengthen itself. So, give it some time.
