Fruit

I was told that my daughter wouldn't need an enzyme with fruit b/c they had no fat or protein in them. But recently I found out that she would need an enzyme with bananas and I noticed that our orange juice has protein in it. Does anyone know any other fruits that she might need enzymes with or where I can find out? Thanks.

I have a book that tells me how many calories/fat grams are in different foods. If I remember correctly bananas have .5 grams, so there is a little fat in a banana.

hi can i ask what book you have i just bought THE FAT COUNTER and in there it says
one dole fresh banana has 120 calories and one gram of fat now if you ask the dr they say no pills with the fruit there isn't enough fat for the pill to work correctly i've been thru this with the dr's for the past month. The dr's also said one pill for every 5-8 grams of fat that they are going to eat.

Hi Amy,

We have the Food Values of Portions Commonly Used, which is a standard reference for nutritionists. All fruits and vegetables have a small amount of both fat and protein -- but not enough to require enzymzes. One medium banana has approximately 1.2 grams of protein and 0.5 grams of fat. That compares to 0.3 grams of protein/0.5 grams of fat for a medium apple and 1.6 grams of protein/0.25 grams of fat for 1/3 cup of raisins. As you know, Jordan has had more than his share of gastrointestinal problems, but has always done fine eating fruits and vegetables without enzymes.

The only exception is avocado, which has 4-5 grams of protein and around 30 grams of fat per medium fruit. But the fat is the good kind, so if Allie will eat avocado, it's a fine way to give her extra calories (we add it to salads or to the greens on sandwiches; Jordan also loves guacamole).

How did your visit with the cf clinic go?

Take good care,

Bambi, Jordan's mom

Thanks for the information everyone.

Bambi, Allie's clinic visit went well. Thanks so much for asking. They took her off the Zantac and put her on Prevacid which seems to be working better than anything else we have tried. Yay! Her doctor said if the Prevacid didn't work we would then test for lactose intolerance and a couple other things. I am hoping the Prevacid keeps working. She goes back in Feb for a check up.

How is Jordan doing?

Oh, thanks for the info about avocados. Unfortunately, Allie doesn't like them or guacamole. I'm going to keep trying though.

Enzymes are not needed with most fruit juices either. If it is a smoothie with yogurt or milk - then enzymes would be needed. Most just need enzymes with food that has protein and/or fat. A trace amount of such shouldn't be a problem. So ice pops, most clear liquids, jello, some pretzels, some dry cereals, fresh fruit, vegetables without dip or butter - shouldn't require enzymes.
