i hope somebody can answer this. iv'e noticed that joe's front teeth have a thick coating of "gunk" in the mornings. he sleeps with his mouth wide open and he snores loudly. i do make sure that he scrubs his teeth before bed every night. it is a recent problem that has only been happening the last few weeks. is this stuff coming up from his lungs while he sleeps. ??? thanks!

i would go to the root of the problem 1st.

why isn't he breathing through his nose at night? Does he have untreated allergies? Has he been allergy test? Are his pillows and matress encased with dust-mite proof casings? Does he have down pillows/comforter? Is there an air-purifier in his room? Has he been in an ENT?

I would definitely take a look at the underlying problem.

Hi! I have the same problem with my 2 1/2 year old sons teeth. He too sometimes breathes through his mouth at night. He is going to an allergy doctor on Wednesday. I really dont know what is causing this but if I get any good info from the doc. I will let you know.

You may want to get him checked out by an ENT doctor like Amy mentioned. Our now 5 year old with cf sleeps with his mouth open all the time and we found out he wasn't getting any air thru his nose because of nose polyups. Just a suggestion.

I have gotten a clean checkup from my ENT, but still sleep with my mouth open & always have. I get the fuzzy teeth. I thought most of it was from using my nebs &/or sleeping with my mouth open. They do get quite gross!

Janet, I don't have CF but this has been happening to ME for the last week or so. My allergies are very very bad this year and I usually go to bed with an unclogged nose but when I wake up during my many preggo bathroom trips each night, I have to struggle to breathe when I get back into bed, my nose is congested and I can hardley blow it out.

I end up blowing my nose a few times each night (only because I'm already awake due to these babies playing on my bladder) and end up (sorry about this detail) snorting a few times to try and clear my nose because the blowing doesn't always work.

I wake up with thick mucuosy stuff stuck to my teeth, literall STUCK!!! and it looks and feels like I never brushed my teeth the night before, BUT I did.

So maybe some allergy medication or something might be in order. I'm not allergic to anything either (had allergy tests up the butt!!!) but every spring about this time, I start to get the sniffles, some sneezes, stuffy at night.... so I have kind of diagnosed myself with Hay fever. Usually some claritin or zyrtec helps me.

Just an idea. Oh, and this does happen to me when I sleep with my mouth open (which is only during this "hay fever" season)

Hi - My son that has cf has this same problem when he is congested or his sinus' are acting up. My other son with out cf had this problem - it turned out that his adnoids were very enlarged. He had them removed and has been good to go since then. I hope some of this might help.

Be careful about allergy testing.

I swore that I had allergies for many, many years, but docs kept drawing blood and telling me that my IgE levels were low, so I must not have allergies.

Little did i know - this isn't a very good way to test for allergies.

The only way to test is a skin test. It should take around 6-8 hours... pricking the skin (usually up and down both arms) with allergens from dust mites, roach feces, trees, pollens, grasses, etc.

Low and behold - I had SEVERE allergies. To many things.

Once I got my allergies under control, my CF health has been much much better. In fact, my FEV1's are 98%

I would highly, highly recommend getting skin testing.

And if you want to go to an ENT - go to more than just one. You would be amazed how different docs can look at the same nose and see different things.

Clearly, something is up with your son. Don't stop until you get answers!!!!

I once had pneumonia (Don't have cf) and afterwards, I had to make an appointment to get my teeth cleane 'cuz they were coated with stuff I just couldn't get removed -- and I'd been to the dentist a couple months before I got sick.

I recently took DS for his first dentist appoinment. I've been brushing his teeth once or twice a day with a baby/toddler toothpaste -- no flouride, nor abrasives. The dentist indicated there was a lot of build up and staining. Really need to get to brushing really good. So I switched to a kids toothpaste with some grit and flouride and the results were instant. Teeth were much whiter -- weren't gray and fuzzy. Still has some staining, but we figure it's from antibiotics early on and adeks vitamins.

We go get our teeth cleaned 4 times a year and it really seems to make a difference. Well worth the cost to get rid of plaque. L
