G Button Nutrition

I am more naturally minded than most people and my son just got a button. He has continued to go further and further down in percentiles but he had a great appetite until we put him on Peptamen Jr. (synthetic goo).

We hate it!!! We are taking him off (after only five days) because we don't want our kid on that stuff. I am trying to work with the center to come up a recipe that satisfies all of the needed nutritional factors.

Has anybody ever done this? Do you have a recipe?

He is 11 months old!

I agree with you! Formulas are gross. That being said, I have never done anything about it. I did purchase a book in hopes that I would get organized enough to make the formulas for my daughter. Here is the link:

I totally agree that most commercial formuals are full of crap ingredients.

I decided this when my daughter was about 5 months old. She was on Enfamil and it was just awdful on her little belly.

So I did some research and found a company called Natures One:

They make baby formulas, Pediasmart(which is a way healthier version of Pediasure), probiotics, DHA, and Pediavance(which is a healthier version of Pedialyte.)
Also, the parents who founded this company has a child with cystic fibrosis who is about 18 I think.

They have a library of information about the better ingredients in their products.

So Mariah was on the baby formual until she was a year old, then I switched her to the Pediasmart.
I then became interested in blending real food, so I found a website www.mealtimenotions.com They sell a book called Homeade Blended Formula Handbook. It goes over about everything you need to know about how to do it except for an exact recipe, just guidelines.

I also bought a Vita mix blender because it blends everything to a fine puree. The vitamix company offers a discount to children with gtubes.

I tried and tried to do this, but just couldn't get the support of her dietician or doctor so I gave up, but would so like to try it again. My main problem was with the thickness of it. I always got it too thick and it took every effort I had to push it through her tube.

I think for most who can't handle a huge volume, you have to mix half real food with half milk or Pediasmart to keep the calories high and be able to push it through the tube.

I would love to try this again, because I think Mariah needs more fiber in her diet. Her stools tend to be kind of hard.
I do have a couple of recipes, but can't find them at the moment. They need some tweeking, but it is a nice start.

I would be more than happy to speak with you if you have any questions, and it would be so nice to talk to someone about all this crazy CF stuff. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> My number is 479-301-3051. Call me anytime.
