G-Button Problems No One Told Us About!

Hi All!

My daughter Emily (8 w/CF) had a G-Button placed during Thanksgiving. We love it!

So, here is the problem....no one told us about "Granulation Tissue" (I got that name from googling g-tube problems on the Internet!).

I have a call in to the Pedi surgeon, but the Pulmonary nurse told me that they would probably want her to use silver nitrate (which I understands burns and turns the skin blue).

Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can use? I am a little ticked that no one told us anything about this. As far as I knew, she should just keep it clean with peroxide and that was it. Help!

My son has problems with granulation tissue, and a lot of the time it can be treated with the silver nitrate. As long they get it on the granulation tissue it isn't a problem. My son is 21 months, and the button seems to bother him more without treating with silver nitrate than with treating it, if that makes sense. Another thing that we will do if the skin is irritated around the stoma is use a diaper rash ointment and that helps a lot with the redness. The silver nitrate does turn their skin an ugly color, but only where it was treated, and it goes away fairly soon. Hope this helps some!!

YUCK, no one told us either- its so gross looking. One of my sons had it. The nurse used the silver nitrite to burn it off. It worked fine. Since then we have used Stomahesive powder to keep it dry. The GI nurse gave us the 'script for it. No problems since.

Thanks for the suggestions. My daughter is getting a button at the end of the month and I really don't know what to expect. I will keep silver nitrate on hand.

I had alot of granulation tissue when I had my G-tube placed and I had to use the nitrate. I dont remember it hurting at all and it's been gone for a long time. I've had the tube since the spring of 2002.
