G-tube and stomach acid

Hello all,

Yet again, another g-tube question haha. I finally got this sucker to heal for the most part, and not have granulation tissue (but in the process I have stopped feeds). Anyways, just the past two days or so, the site has really began to hurt like if the button is touched either by my shirt pulling/pushing on it, an arm etc.

I just had a cold sore... again, and at first I thought... damn it, somehow I gave it to that area... again (I feel like I am a hygenic person but I can never help but wonder if I slipped up and didnt wash my hands if I inadvertanly touched my cold sore)... but I thought about it, and since the whole area around the hole is super sensitive and painful and starting to get really red, and raw looking (not granulation tissue raw either) that I am probably leaking stomach acid.

Does that mean I need a new button? I thought I remembered someone saying they put something around it when they noticed stomach acid. I dont want to put anything 'wet' around it since I have worked so hard on keeping the granulation tissue away (Last week I am finally able to lay on my stomach again, granted for about 2 minutes but still)...

Thanks for any answers, sorry so long.

Josh had the same problem with one of his tubes. It just never fit right and leaked ALL the time! His shirts were stained and he had to keep it covered. gross

He used a 2x2 split sponge under the tube and stomahesive powder to keep it dry. Then he covered the whole thing with a big bandaid.

The new tube doesn't leak at all, so I think it was the position of the tube causing trouble for him. Have you checked with the GI nurse for suggestions?

Did it hurt him? My site is soo painful again. I have never even heard of stomahesive powder, (I googled my question on a random site w/ g-tubes someone else mentioned it).

I dont talk to the GI place where I got it done, they dont understand CF or the reason why I got the G-tube... I am calling my home health company though b/c I think they owe me a new button... I am hoping that changing it will make the leaking stop.

I would use the 2x2 split pad to soak up any leakage. Jordin's button is new, but keeping that under/around it has helps alot and they say it helps to not get that granulation tissue.
Hope you can get a new button and fix the problem!

The 2x2 split is a very good idea, but I'm wondering if you haven't got an infection. Is it really red and angry looking? You might want to get it swabbed to make sure that you don't have pseudomonas or mrsa there -- sadly if you culture those in your lungs its more likely to have them grow in skin infections as well. They may be able to control it with some antibiotic cream.

Yes it hurt because it was always raw. I didn't realize that you can get stomahesive powder over the counter, but here it is on the Walgreens site...

I dont think its an infection b/c the only part that is red, is right around the opening, like if stomach acid was coming out right there.... I could be wrong, I thought my granulation tissue was infection but they said it has to be like huge red for it to be an infection.

I do have pseudo, but not mrsa... so that is a concern. I did ask a wound care doctor about it, but I dont think he understood b/c I was asking if by like coughing in the air could pass it on, obviously touching it w/ dirty hands will transmit something (He said that 30% of the population have staph on them, and that 80% of that staph is MRSA...so it really is everywhere nowadays).

I get a new button on friday, this morning I gave up and I put desitin on it and I will probably see if my local walgreens has that stomahesive powder for now and for the future.... did it help at all?

I also have lidocaine, and that didnt even really help. As long as the sucker doesnt move, I think I'll make it to friday, its just so tender and sore where it comes out... obviously lol

Thanks for all the responses, love counting on you guys <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
