g-tube and swimming

I'm sure you can go swimming with a g-tube, but what about swimming in a lake or pond? Do you have any added precautions? I wonder about some bacteria getting in there. The water is clean (as clean as a lake gets), not stagnant or anything.

My daughter is young yet to be swimming, just something I've wondered about. Can't really be any worse than a bath in our well water, can it?

I am not sure that I have a specific answer to your question as far as lakes go, but for our son, I bought him a little "wet suite" that he wears while he is swimming. I like to keep his mickey covered, in fact he still wears little "onesie" t-shirts under his clothes. I get paranoid, too, that dirt or bacteria will get in there. Of course girl's bathing suits already offer a good bit of coverage over that area (unlike boys). Luke has been to the lake and to pools and his site has been fine after--no sign of irritation or anything. So as far as the micey goes, I think you are fine. I have read posts in the past where others have said that their doctors recommend that CFers not swim in lakes/ponds that kind of thing--so you may want to check with your clinic.

You are fine swimming anywhere you would normally swim.

Remember, a G-tube is not like an IV/picc. An IV goes into your bloodstream which is by nature a sealed environment so you have to be careful.

The g-tube goes into your stomach. Anything that might leak is no different than eating/drinking just w/o the hassle of swallowing. And as we all know, you can eat just about anything and survive (think all the kids that eat dirt). Most little kids are going to end up ingesting some water when they swim and it is not a big deal normally.

FYI, the concern about CF & lakes/ponds is that stagnant water can harbor bacteria, especially PA and Cepacia, that if inhaled can impact a CF'er.

My son Parker swims in lakes and pools with his g-tube with no problems. Lots of times he will wear a shirt because he does not feel like answering questions from other kids until he know them well. Another idea we tried for a while was putting a 4"x4" bandage on it. It worked but he did not like taking the band aid off. Regular cleaning of the site like in a bath should be more than sufficient to keep things clean.
