Just wondering how often do you change your g-tube? Or how long do they normally last? What other care do you do to your g-tube? I am curious about everyone elses care.

If you have a Mic-Key button it is supposed to be replaced every 6 months (per mfg).

We recently switched to the AMT mini as it is a ton smaller, I didn't see a recommendation in the documentation with it but I'm assuming the same 6-month timing.

As for anything else, we don't really do anything much. Technically you should drain & refill the balloon monthly per the mfg, but I'll be the first to admit it is not high on our priority list. Beyond that, he has had his for years so it pretty much just does it's thing.

The feeding tube is pretty new for us, my dd got her mic-key in November. We've checked the water in the balloon and added a few cc's more last time, but that is about all we've done. I'm guessing we are due for a button change out soon.

Only real care we give is to soak it in the bathtub once a day to get all the "crusties" off. and make sure we tape down the extension so it doesn't pull and irritate the stoma.

I go to another web site that is not a CF cite, but has a whole board just for tube feeding issues. It has been a huge help with all my questions regarding tube feeding and stoma care. I don't know anyone IRL who has ever dealt with this. If you want the link, just pm me and I'll send it your way.

The GI who placed Emily's tube/Mic-Key told us that he saw better results when the button was NOT replaced every 6 months, but instead, changed when it needed to be changed. Over the years he saw more granulation, staph infections around sites and poorer healing sites (after removal) when the button was "monkeyed" with (his words) on a regular basis. He said to change it when it needed it. I had huge reservations about this. Just didn't seem righ to me, but we went with it, and it's been fine.

We know we need to change it when the site starts to "leak" or the button starts to sit funny on her tummy. That's what we follow. I'd say it works out to about every 6-7 months, anyway, but we just watch carefully for those signs.

As far as care, we wash around the button with warm water when Emily gets dressed in the morning and when she puts her jammies on. And, of course, it gets a good soaking in the tub on bath nights. We do keep split IV pads around/under the button. This keeps her skin from getting irritated and keeps the site dry. Before we did this, granulation was a big problem. At any sign of redness or irritation now, we apply triamcinolone under the iv sponge.
