G Tube with CFRD

I have been reading some blogs about little ones getting g-tubes. Now I know the enzymes are taken & handled differently, but I am curious if anyone has CFRD.

IF you have CFRD & use a G-Tube.....how does the insulin work out? Did you or do you still have issues with extreme highs/lows?

Its just something that popped in my head.

Thanks

Mel,
I have CFRD and JUST got a g-tube (a month ago), and I'm very happy with it.

Prior to the g-tube I was using Humalog and Lantus for treating the Diabetes.

Since I do my tube feeds while I'm sleeping. Endo added NPH to my routine because it's duration is 6-8 hours, covering the 8 hours of feeding. (taken 30 minutes before start) Insulin is adjusted depending on how much nutrition and b/s numbers, of course. (I happen to take 8 units). I continue to take my other insulins as I did before the g-tube.

As for enzymes, I take them just before the feeding, and again when I wake up (8-ish hours later). Ideally, if you wake during the night for any reason, it would benefit to take them then too, but, our dr doesn't want us to purposely wake to take them.

I hope that helps.

Edited to add:
My morning numbers are always on target now, compared to prior. So, I think all-in-all, it's been very beneficial.

Also, If you are thinking of getting one, I'd recommend during it while admitted (verses an out-patient), that way Endo is there to help monitor and adjust. In the beginning, my b/s numbers were very high, but they got it worked out, and I've had no problems since.

Hi Mel i had a g tube for 8years,but had it taken out and now use a nasal tube.

Ive had a really hard time trying to cover my feed with insulin, because i used to go really high two hours after starting the feed. I still get problems covering it now, especially when i have a bad chest infection.
At the moment i have my insulin before starting the feed, and that usually covers me through the night. I take 30 units of the mixtard30. I started on 13 units, and gradually took it up unit by unit untill i was covered.
i also take a massive 20 enzymes before my feed, and 10 after finishing.

Can i just add that i went to the hospital today, and this year ive gained 11pounds! Im soooooo proud of myself, cos ive never weighed this much, and its so important to be a good weight going into transplant. *big smile*

Take care Mel!
