I'm like you, really crap at putting on weight but apart from the obvious - having protein shakes, etc I have found that eating really late at night helps. Just before you go to bed eat some ice cream or something and coz u lie down and sleep you don't get the chance to work off any calories! just an idea - i've found it helps for me so worth a shot!!

i feel the best way to gain weight is to gain muscle mass by working out. i dont know what your energy level is but even if you start slow and walk a mile a day you will gain muscle little by little.
muscle is the best way to keep you healthy.

Have you tried Scandi shakes. They are shakes especially made for CF patients. All you have to do is write to the company and request the shakes and if you take Ultrase which is a requirement you have to include proof of prescription. They are really good and 600 calories each. Hope this helps. AXCAN SCANDIPHARM INC.

If you dont take Ultrase or you want samples call this number: 1-800-4-Scandi

I have CFRD too, and they make sugar free scandi's. It's the same amount of everything just no carbs! It's great. Although I don' drink them much since now I have a feeding tube and that works great so I don't have to force myself to eat!

jemmie11,

My husband just got this pudding today it's called Stallone High Protein pudding. it has 100 calories, 15 fat calories, total fat 2 grams no saturated or trans fat, less than 5mg of cholesterol, 430mg of sodium, 440mg of potassium, 2g carbs, 1gram of fiber, 0 sugars and 20 grams of protein. he will eat anything, so I decided to give it a try (he just got it in the mail today from a protein company) because I am so picky it is awful! You could taste a slight hint that there was some protein stuff in there-I'm not going to lie to you, but it definately was tasty and I could handle eating one or two of those a day, plus it was only $7 for 4, 6oz cans. He bought it from http://www.powernutrition.net/ . Here is the link directly to the pudding, http://powernutrition.net/product_info.php?p=protein-pudding&products_id=609&osCsid=b8d38b9677bb09341fbe89bab502a00c It might be something worth trying for only $7.

Also, (man I really need to start logging in so I can edit my posts) if you try it and decide you really do like it, you can order it directly from www.instonenutrition.com where by price breakdown it's about .20 cents more expensive a can, but the shipping is MUCH MUCH cheaper than the last site I posted. the last site though is a good place to start since you get 4 for $7, but the website only sells them by the case of 24 for 44.99. Good luck!

I hated the Scandishakes personally. I know some people love them, and that works. But for those of you who don't like them (I know I'm not the only one), I used to drink an Instant Breakfast (made with whole milk) in its place. Also a pretty good source of calories. And I liked the taste of those better, myself.

I just had a thought, maybe you could check next time you go to the grocery store. My husband uses the boost shakes, he likes them a lot better than the scandi products and they have less sugars, more calories and more proteins. But he doesn't have CFRD so I imagine that's why it works for him. There is a product called glucerna, made by the same company as the boost shakes, but for people with diabetes. I have never looked at the back to check out what the goodies are, but it might be worth taking a look at.

Physician has told my daughter not to worry about the grease intake. She has not had any problems with absorption of grease - just has to adjust her enzymes accordingly. As a matter of fact there is a supplement my daughter was on last year to help gain weight - and it was a oil/fat emulsion that she added to her foods. It was a small silver packet of oil that was approx. 400 kcals. Unfortunately the taste was horrible- she could taste it even cooked into her foods - and we stopped using it. I don't recall the name of it other than it started with an E. The best thing we've done over the past year was to add curcumin to her regimen - her stools have been normal since the 2nd month of introduction (diarrhea at first while body was adjusting), we were able to cut enzyme intake in half - and she has gained 10 pounds.
