gas/stomach cramps with one year old

I know I have asked this question before but my 1 year old since switching him to milk is experiencing more gas and tightening/crampiness in his stomach with some constipation. Is this just common to CF and he will have to deal with this the rest of his life or is there more I can be doing to help him? I did give him some prune juice yesterday and that helped. Am I feeding him to much dairy and that could be why? Any help would be appreciated. I posted in the family section as well. Thank you.

Paula

And if this is common can someone explain why? Is it b/c of the pancreatic response (or lack of)...

My 9 year old daugher has CF and just a few months ago was really complaining about stomach cramps and constipation...we took her in to clinic to see what was going on and they did an X-ray to find out that she was blocked up again...this time was much easier to fix... NO SURGERY!!! they gave her a prescription for GlycoLax...after a few days she seemed fine again... The docs told me that i could just give it to her when she complained about cramping or if it continues to occur than i could give it to her on a regular basis.

Good Luck.... and i would not hesitate to call the docs..just in case and maybe it can be treated early without surgery

milk gives me gas quite often as well. it stinks too LOL. Dont know if it is just something common among CFers or not, but sure its possible. It doesn't constipate me though. Maybe a little crampiness. How much dairy are you feeding him?

He takes about 24 oz of milk daily plus cheese/butter on his morning toast and depending on the day pudding or ice cream. Thanks.

Hi....37 yr old female with CF. I have always suffered from gas a tummy pains/cramps. As I got older it got worse. I take prune juice everyday...sometimes 2 times a day to keep regular. I was diagnosed with CF at the age of 3. The tummy pains are soooooooooooo bad sometimes that I am curled up in the fetal position until the pains goes away. Pain killers/Advil don't work...it makes it worse. I also am bloated 24/7 no matter what I eat or don't eat....I am bloated and gassy. Good luck to him and you.

You're not alone. My 16-year-old son started blocking up as soon as we put him on milk when he was a baby, and still cannot take most dairy products. He would end up in the hospital with intestinal blockages every time we tried milk; we know other families where the kids don't block entirely, but have major bloating problems. We've narrowed down Jordan's intolerance to the milk protein, casein, which can turn into glue (this is no exaggeration -- you can actually paste things together with it) when it's treated with vinegar (acid), heated, and dried out on filter paper. We know that cf makes the intestine more acidic than normal, and it's both warm in there and tends to be on the dehydrated side, as the basic defect in salt transport draws too much water away from the gut contents into the cells. Great conditions for turning any milk protein passing through into glue.

So one thing you might try, if you haven't already, is to give your child antacids to couteract the extra acidity in his intestines (this makes the pancreatic enzymes work better, too). Also, he could take lactulose syrup, which helps pull water back into the intestinal contents, reducing constipation. And prunes do help because of their natural laxative property. For us, though, it was necessary to avoid all casein-containing milk products except those that are cultured (like yogurt), where the protein is already partially digested by the culture bacteria. Butter is OK, as well, because it's mostly fat, rather than protein. Fortunately, there are now lots of substitutes for milk products on the market (only be wary of soy cheeses, which usually contain casein), so your child doesn't have to feel deprived, even with no milk at all.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

I would recommend having an allergy test performed-it may very well be a milk allergy. Is he just coming off of breast milk or formula?

Hello All,

Thank you for your posts! I think the prune juice maybe the thing. He has been on milk products (whole milk) for about 9 weeks. I may think about getting him tested. My oldest still won't drink milk but does tolerate other dairy products well. I may also call the clinic just to make sure he does not have a blockage.. thanks~ Paula

hello my son is 6, from the time of birth he stays constipated, he has tried all laxatives, through IV and so forth, looks like a caged animal until he uses the bathroom. this has been his biggest issue as well as sinuses. I currently found a tea non-caff in a oriental store. it is senna tea, 1/2 cup before bed the next morning like clock work, this allows him to go to school with out problems. the name of the tea is ballerina tea. check it out with your doctor first please. my son is 6 and 91lbs. It has been in my experience constipation is a battle we face everyday but the tea helps us. not miralax, not pills, laxatices or go lax. tea is warm and hits the stomach and does not need to be broke down by the body.
