Gastric Emptying Study

Anyone had one? I just had one today for both liquids and solids. Basically they feed you radioactive stuff and then 'watch' how it goes through your digestive system. The liquid one took about 1/2 hour. The stuff I drank had no taste. For the solid test they fed me eggs and toast w/ jelly. The eggs were 'spiked' with the stuff. Then every hour they scan you to see how long it takes for the food to move on through the system.

I don't have the official results yet, but the lab tech said that things were emptying more slowly out of my stomach than the normal baseline. So that got me wondering if slower is a normal CF thing? What kinds of things are they looking for and what shows up with this test?

I won't be seeing the CF GI doc for a while so I figured I'd pester y'all with QUestions. I don't have much pancreatic insufficiency (if any - docs are still in poke me / prod me mode here) I got to hypothesizing that maybe slower is better as it would give my system more time to absorb nutrients. So that might help account for me being one of those CFers who is overweight. ANy thoughts or experiences you want to share?

I can only tell you my experience....can't tell you really what was normal. I had the test done a couple of years ago and they did not check me EVERY hour after I ate the radioactive eggs, ughh! I had them for breakfast on my Birthday BTW! I just had to stay still for about an hour while they watched them go through me.....now that is "reality tv" that would get some ratings I am not sure....so don't quote me on this...but, I think they are looking for them to go through in a reasonable amount of time. I would not think really slow would be a good thing; but, I could be wrong. I am curious to know why they did the test. Were you having some difficulty (GERD or other issues)? I hope they can get to the bottom of why you had the test done to begin with and help by getting to the source of your problem. Keep us posted.

I have had this and the faster the stomach empties the better. I do believe that "slower" would go along with CF and be due to mucus blockage. The slower the stomach empties the more likely it is for reflux to occur. Are you having reflux issues?

Thanks for the input. The GI doc is in the process of doing a 'full workup' on me. Since I was DX'd only a few months ago they're still trying to assess the involvement and status of CF with regards to my various organs.

I've had reflux problems for years. I was suspected of having an ulcer about 20 years ago (not sure that was the proper DX). I forget the treatment (ABX I think) but I'm too lazy to go up 2 flights of stairs to find it in my stack of med records. I've been popping Tums fairly regularly for at least 2 decades.

I've also had IBS my whole life. I distinctly remember it as a kid, as I would rush to the front bathroom where Mom kept the Ranger Rick and National Graphic magazines. After dinner (before desert) my brothers would be banging on the door claiming "NOT FAIR She always gets the bathroom and we have to help clear the table." Ha Ha Ha. I always got to SET the table.

I also had a Schatzki's ring that was removed (via a tube down my throat) about 5 years ago. Oh, and my gallbladder was removed about 15 years ago. I'm waiting for the stool elastase results to come in too and the GI doc said something about doing a colonoscopy before my next visit too. My Mom had Colon cancer (and breast cancer at the same time, but she's fine now thankfully!!!!!) so that gives me another GI risk factor too.

I've never had to take enzymes. I was always thin / slim as a kid but started to gain weight in my 20s. I always blamed that gain on dorm food! But after nearly 20 years of marriage, having a kid and less dancing at clubs like I did when I was single!! it all added some weight too. I've been on Prevacid for several years now and the GI doc added Nizatidine to my daily pill collection recently. The CF docs want me to loose 15 lbs. I'm halfway there. ~Juliet
